Pearlman TM 1, revisited...

I know there's been about a hundred thousand posts on the Pearlman TM 1, but with all good reasons. Two weeks ago, Dave unexpectedly dropped off a TM 1 mic at my studio, but I was right in the middle of a project and couldn't get to it for a few days. Short of a week ago, I had a vocal session and my clients were a young nineteen-year-old daughter and her father in his mid-forties. Without mentioning any names, he's a very well known pop artist from the eighties.

I decided to try the TM 1 on these two vocalists. The Pearlman was being used in conjunction with the Pacifica. I recorded the daughter first. She had a very thin sounding but pleasant vocal quality. Her role was to sing the verses and pre-choruses. After several takes, we listened to the recorded vocal on a pair of S3A and HS-50M, two completely different sounding monitors. We were all blown away. There are many words to describe sound, but one word that comes to mind in regard to the TM 1 is that it sounds extremely “solid”. Nothing boomy, nothing hyped, just solid.

The male vocal is a raspy, deep sounding tone quality and his job was to sing the choruses. Again, after several takes, we listened and again we were all very excited about the quality of the vocal sound. I'm always a little hesitant to use the same mic on such different vocal tones, but the TM 1 really lived up to its expectations and reputation. I had no problems sitting the vocal tracks in the mix, and they sounded great.

I can’t say enough about the TM 1. It’s an awesome mic and deserves the high praises it has received. Great job Dave.
