I need to find a place I can rent (or build) a mix room in San Francisco

Hi. I'm relocating to San Francisco next month and am looking for a spot to build a mix room (not an SSL room, more ITB/hybrid) or a studio that wants to rent out an extra control room monthly. I'd also possibly be into sharing a room with another engineer/producer type depending on the schedule needed. Anyone know a good spot or have a studio looking to rent a B Room or something? Give me a shout!

Hey Bounce,
I am an engineer at Talking House and it is a pretty great place. There are two Icon rooms and one SSL 9000K room. You can contact Cindy regarding rates and other info,

Headed up north, huh? There's no Kaldi or Villa Corona, but there's Muddy Waters and Taqueria Cancun. Good luck, and have a blast!

60 channel, hand-wired Calrec with full Automation
Only 2" 24 to 1/2" 2-track mixdown.
He's got 2 FLECKINGER'S
1 Fairchild
3 10' plate reverbs...
full rack of neve's, tele's, ua's...great stuff...
He's got every fender head known. i saw 3 of the little brown, tweed and wood fender amps from the 40's. Ton's of great guitars. a wall of marshall's.
B3 with full leslie. Baby Grand.
main room is probalby 25' by 40' long by 20' high. 2 or even 3 additional rooms available.

It's been a private studio for over 10 years. He's willing to cut amazing deals, as it's a "private" place. i've been able to help him out recently and thought i'd pass this incredible opportunity along to rest of my tape-op buddies.

if you would like an introduction, pics or to see the place, just email me...

Haha, I saw that last week and have been speaking with him about this studio. Thanks, Memphis, for lookin' out! It seems this place only has one control room from what I can gather and the studio is going for $400 a day (which is possibly a great rate for that room for some things for sure!), but I'm not quite in the $12,000 a month market :-)

I'm looking for a mix room I can rent out monthly 24/7 or pay a flat fee to use it mostly weekdays, during the day. I'm open to possibly share with another person who needs mostly nights and weekends, but I'm somewhat flexible.

I'm not looking for studios offering day rates of X hundred dollars as that adds up fast when using it most every day all month. Know't I mean? I need a room that I call home for all my work with my own clients.

I'd be open to a somewhat "staff producer/engineer/mixer" thing as well if it was a happy place with good thoughts and free donuts :-) Okay, I could skip the donuts.

edit: Now I'm craving donuts so deal's off there.

Donuts are good, if you don't eat too many. Especially powdered straight outta the fridge!
Ah, well, I look out for people. What's better to do with my free time?
I'll be in your neck O'the woods in a few months, permanently, I'd rather be in LA than anywhere. My kids are going to love it.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.

Where will you be living? Traffic kind of blows in SF so factor in your commute time. You realize that SF is some of the most expensive real estate on the planet right? There's all kinds of funky space south of market and in Oakland. What do your clients expect? Parking needed? My friend just vacated some space at "Closer" south of Market; I heard The Plant in Sausalito closed but the spaces are still there...

We're nailing down our neighborhood this month before the move. We like inner Richmond, Downtown is cool, Mission maybe, North Beach. We like to be around places to go :-)

Hoping to use my car less and more public transpo. Good for the earth and all, plus less traffic!

Yeah, I know real estate is brutal there but I'd rather live in a box in an inspiring place with cleaner air than another 15 years here :-) LA's definitely got it's strengths but I need some new inspiration! You only live once.

I'm going to be mixing a lot and that will mostly be unattended but on production projects I plan to rent A rooms for drums or bands, etc. Then I'll take things back to my mix room and possibly do some overdubs or vocals there if the room allows.
I have several clients in LA so I will be coming back down here to track vocals, etc. Then I'll be doing more of the instrument production in SF. So parking is kinda optional :-)

Is CLOSER a studio?

I hope you find a spot and I bet you will find a stellar place. I have a few relatives in SF and hey all ive that"expensive real estate warning" as if LA and NY aren't every bit as expensive, then you get the gang warnings, but, look at national averages and you could live in a cheap city like Detroit, Little Rock, Memphis, Pine Bluff, and they are multiples of the national averages competing for the bottom as far as crime and being uninspiring places, so, you're right on for moving somewhere that inspires you!

LA inspires me , so my family is moving there this summer.

I lived in NYC for 12 years and it was inspiring too.

What kind of stuff are you doing? Need hooking up in the DJ community? People to play and track your stuff?

Heya, Memphis, thanks for the support! Inspiration goes a long way towards motivation :-)

Like many people these days, I wear a lot of hats. Most of my work lately has come from producing (and recording) records and mixing but I have composed a good bit of music for TV as well. Extra mailbox money rocks! I play drums and enough keys, bass, and guitar to pull off certain types of records but will definitely need a new rolodex of locals who specialize in specific styles or instruments (string players, jazz guitar guys, horns, etc.).

As for what I'm doing...I've done a LOT of acoustic, rock, and pop records but also have a love for electronic music and the boundaries it can push, both creating it and mixing it. I'm very into hybrids of acoustic, electric, and electronic music.
I recently mixed a hip hop record with some big names on Warner and that was great! Everyone seemed hyped about those mixes so I'm definitely open to more of that! It was fun and, dare I say, highly profitable? :-)

Anyway, any contacts of good people in the bay area are definitely much appreciated!
