Power Amp Suggestions for Yamaha NS 10's

I was curious to know which power amp to get for my Yamaha NS 10's.

Bryston 2B was originally my choice but I haven't been able to find one. An acquaintence mentioned a Crown amp but I forgot the model. Or is there another amp to consider?

Go onto www.audiogon.com There is always a lot of used Bryston amps on there for good prices. Lots of 3bst and 4bst amps. Auidiogon is like an all audio ebay.

Adcom GFA 545.

Corky James tried the Brystons but felt they were too cloudy in the tops. He's gone to all Adcom amps now.

I use them myself as there is no better amp for the money.
BTW, like many things great, they are not made anymore so you need to find used one's.

This topic has been covered tons of times(do a search).

These days i am using a Perreaux.

Much cleaner and smoother at the top than Brystons on NS10's.

I also love it on an Auratone.

The Perreaux (spelling?) sounds amazing on NS10's.

A little pricey but you won't keep blowing like I do with my Hafler.

I guess you need to change woofers 3X a year anyway.

I got the Hafler P3000, and it works pretty dang well for the price.

They are my "second" monitors rather than my primary set...

Bryston 3bSST if you can find one used, far better than older Brystons...

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far! Keep the coming!

Just as a side note, was curious to know if anyone here uses NS 10's for primary set. I've been using computer speakers and managed to get nominated last year for a national TV award project I mixed with them and it worked really well. So that's what I'm moving from.

Also curious to know is a sub for the NS 10's necessary.

Go out and get a pair of KRK V8 amps.

You can only get them attached to a pair of speakers, though.

Don't know if it is *necessary*, but they are definitely a bit "bass-light" on their own.

Bryston 4bst here and I love it. Haven't got to try the Adcom's or the Perreaux so unfortunately I can't compare the difference but I'd definately be game to try them out at some point.

imo that's one of their biggest strengths, it forces me to get the midbass zone dialed. if i can track the bassline on the 10's and feel it on the mains, i'm home free.

big bonus points if i can get the bass to sound round and warm on the 10's. it's all about the 100hz to 300hz relationship, ime.

So what is the frequency response for ns-10's? I'm guessing 60hz to 20khz?

It doesn't matter what amp you use.. the key is choosing the proper tissue.

We bought a pair of those and returned them after a month. But I guess different strokes for different folks.

I use an older JBL SA660, which I think sounds great. IMHO, the NS-10s are perfect for seeing if a mix is coming together. If the drums is over here and the guitar and vocals is over there, they'll tell you more quickly than something with a bigger spectrum. They really address the "music" part of the music, for lack of a better term.

Best,

The Quad 405 is a good match with NS10's in my opinion - it seems to tame their worst excesses although I wouldn't want to use them as my only speakers anyway. In fact, my NS10's have been relegated to the kitchen next to the studio for the last 6 years and no-one has asked for them to be moved back into the studio for a session.

Cheers

James.

What about a Crown K1 or K2?

Wouldn't this be a good combo for them? No fan.

I've used a Crown DC300 , it's a great amp but somehow it wasn't such a good reference amp, did you try the Crown for Auratones ?
