head room issues

I am using a lynx aurora with logic 8.0.2

I notice I run out of headroom quick when it states its +20db before clipping.

I am trying to record drums with neve style preamps which starts at 15db and if a bass drum is average -30 incoming level i shouldn't need to use a pad or have to be completely cranked all the down on the preamps gain. It seems like I am 10db out of wack in my metering and structure. My lynx level is set to analog and +4

Is something not set right on my lynx or the metering in logic? Anyone have this problem. I hope I am making sense this kind of talk is new to me.

I dunno if this will help, but in the mixer window on the far left if you right-click the "-- db" you can switch between exponential and sectional-db metering? Also check pre-fader metering? Not sure why either of these would cause your problem, but something easy to check... Good luck...

Is the output of the preamp supposed to run at +4? I would assume so but...

Does the lynx have some software metering you can look at? Sorry if you mentioned this but wanted to clarify - Does the lynx and logic show different levels? Does this happen with other preamps?

I couldn't find anything in the lynx software mixer. I will try the mixer section in logic. The lynx is set to +4

Thanks!
