I was thinking about getting the Apogee Duet for like months, but then i read this. Looks pretty nasty. Anyone confirm this or have another opinion?

this is no problem for me.

otherwise there is an option for a different break out box from another company.

What an absurd article. Trying to get some webhits?

yes it has tangly wangly cables, these can be seen on Apogee's website (near bottom):

Apogee Electronics > Products > Duet

(btw they can be annoying but it's not like OMG I DIDNT SEE THIS COMING, WTF @ TANGLY CABLES ALL OF A SUDDEN)

Well the Breakout cable is convenient and sucks at the same time.

It´s cool cus if you are just using headphones on the go then u dont need to connect the cables or even have them with you.

But they do seem rather flimsy and can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

all cables get tangled, get over it. hardly a design fault.

i put my headphones in my bag, 5 minutes later they look like a spaghetti junction, it's not going to affect you too much

it's a valid concern, similar to a mic pre that has a wall wart power supply, but in both cases no one is forced to buy anything. And if you buy something without looking at it well...

A design flaw (IMO) is something that is not readily identifiable upon first use. If someone bought a Duet and didn't realize the breakout cables could get tangled then I think the other intricacies and nuances of recording audio will escape them as well.

And then to go on and say the ins and outs aren't color coded? Just get some colored electrical tape and label the ins outs if that's a big deal, and don't knot everything up and you'll be fine. I hate when people just bitch about stuff and don't offer any solutions. I mean nevermind giving it up for Apogee for saving money by using a breakout cable (cheap) versus a multiport box (not as cheap) so that they can offer an entry level product.

I thought the flaw was unacceptable noise specs at some sample rates.

OMG... what a catastrophe!

I tied a loose loop of soft string around the cables where they break-out of the main plug. When I'm done using the unit, I slide the loop up and "bunch" all the connectors. Works like the plastic slider that's on a set of iPod earbuds. Never tangles.

I love advertising... create a "problem" and then market a solution. The guy's just trying to sell an over-priced break-out box.
