U47 Abbey Road!

Please take a look at this video from Youtube of LeAnn Rimes Live From Abbey Road, I've noticed the Neumann U47 that is the main vocal Mic, There is a type of "pop shield" thing on the Mic which im curios of.

Is that what it is? Is it a specially designed pop shield for the U47 or something else? If that's not its purpose then what is?

Any help would me much appreciated.

Ive also noticed two small capsule condensers recording the Acoustic in stereo and a room mic placed between the guitarist and LeAnn. If anybody has any idea what these are it will be much appreciated.

Thanks

I believe that Abbey Road made thosr for the mics. Blue makes a similar one.

it's called a spit screen (same idea as a pop shield but also used to help prevent moisture hitting the capsules)
abbey road started using them in the mid 60's

Yes, EMI designed ... a repro is included with the U87 Anniversary edition.

If you listen well you'll notice a nice and smooth reverb, I believe that's the job of the 2 condenser, and the sound of the guitar is not too much "in your face" so it's maybe a mix of the 2 small condenser close mic and the condenser in between leAnn and the guitarist

I actually don't think I would mind all that much being hit by her spit for some reason.

Here are several nice shots of Lennon and Harrison singing into them during the live-in-the-studio recording of "All You Need Is Love": YouTube - The Beatles-All You Need Is Love.

The SDCs both have Neumann badges. Very hard to make out much else. The top one could be a KM54, the bottom a KM84. Maybe. The capsule shapes look right. Can't see the room mic except in shadow against the guitar.

The "room mic" could be a RCA 44 ribbon?

Isn't LeAnn Rimes just lovely.

Great voice - I so wish my wife could sing like that!

Wow, what doo doo. I prefer to hear this kind of music with ridiculous amounts of auto tune and a hack PRO-grammed backing tracks. This performance is a bit too "organic" for my taste, ha.

From what I can see, it's two KM-54s on the guitar and one RCA 44 between them. And that vocal mic.. RODE K2?! ;-)

At the end, I was waiting for her to say, "Thanks.. thanks, um, so.. I'll be playing every Thursday in April at Renaissance Cafe in Corona Del Mar and you can check out my new CD at myspace.com/..."

By no means is that a Rode. I think it might be another desecration of the Beetles playground to put almost any Rode in there. U47. they have a few of them lying around there.

In Recording The Beatles it states that Abbey Road purchased U47s, but modified them to U48 spec.

I was joking about the RODE by the way, ha. I thought the little "wink-y" face would convey that. Ahhhh well.
