Vocal Mic Technique for Singers

Where can I find info for proper vocal mic technique regarding live performance?
Things like:
- point mic straight/angled into mouth
- how much to pull mic away when singing louder
- when (if ever) to cup the mic versus hold it?

That kinda thing? Tips and tricks in singing live into a handheld mic.

Hundreds of options and opinions. Don't cup the mic. (Except for quickie feedback checking live on stage) If it's a handheld (ala SM58), get 4 to 6 inches away pointing straight on to start, then 'work' the mic from a bit closer for soft passages (or guttural rap/hardcore scream) to as much as arms' length for louder parts. A good vocalist SHOULD know this. If it's mounted, the proximity effect can be lessened by singing a bit off-axis, that is, not straight into the mic. But you'll lose presence, so practice.

There's a youtube vid of Mike Patton (working on a Björk record IIRC) where you see him working the mic. A true master!
For live tips, buy an experienced FOH engineer a beer and talk to him for 1/2 an hour about the do's and dont's.

Watch Englebert Humperdick. He's the master. He will hold it close for intimacy, then belt out a note so powerful he holds the mic at his waist!

All along, filling the hall with sound and always on level and on pitch.

No compressors needed with these talents. The rest of you are on your own.
