I've got some extra doe burnin my pockets

I have a chance to pick up an Avalon 2022 and a 2044 for $3200. US, is this a good deal. (both pre and compressor are cherry!)?

How do they sound? Any thoughts?

Sounds good to me. That's the pre and eq, right? Personally, for that kind of jack, I would spend it on some of the Brent Averill/Avedis 312 pres and E15 eqs with a 6 space lunch box. The E15s are the best thing going on the market right now. There's not a bad frequency on them, even when they're boosted 16db! I got some on a recommendation and couldn't be happier. But the avalon stuff is cool. Good clean sound. Especially for urban music. I'm a rocker, though...

Hummm.. people seem to love or hate Avalon gear. I am not a fan of any of their stuff but don't take my word on it.

The only thing I will say is you really should take some time and do some research around here and other sites because you can get some kick a$$ gear for that kind of money.

Damn, you know you guys are absolutly correct. The only thing Avalon I own is a pair of U5 direct boxes. I just figured $1600 a pc was a price I could not resist , even if I sell those buggers....lol

My heart wants a pair of Chandler LTD1's, I have aSummit TPA200b and Focusrite RED 6 (Before the Digidesign days). Even a pr.of Pendulum Quartets.

I do like the 2044 compressor. never herad the 2022 pre.

Dunno...Distressors are pretty cool for that kind of $$$.

I don't see why people hate-on Avalon gear so much. I think it has to do with the fact that every MF who could run up $2k on his Visa went to GC between 2001 and 2003 to get a 737sp. At least, that's the way it seems here (L.A.). It's still a great piece -- as a mic channel, compressor/EQ for tracking (with separate pre), or mixing channel processor.

Thanks everyone!

"Dunno...Distressors are pretty cool for that kind of $$$."- I have a pair of es8's Britt Mod, Stereo link.

Sometimes I wonder about the pre amp circus. There are sooooo many of these puppies on the market! I'm sure they are all good, it's trying to find the right combinations that work for any given project. I just don't want to end up with 4 or five that sound simular to each other.

My main concerns are keyboards (Anolog and soft synth) Vocals, an occasional acoustic or electric guitar, and an occasional bass including upright.

I don't mic drums or 18 piece orchestras (I'm not that guy) I leave it to the real pro's.

I am not knocking the thing. If it works for anyone else cool but it does not trip my trigger. I have to wonder if the reverse is also possible, every MF who could run up $2k on his Visa went to GC and bought one and now they have talked themselves into believing the hype and face it no one wants to admit the thing they paid $2k for is not as cool as they thought it was.

For me I used them at other studios but never owned one (that might be the key here) and never liked what I got out of them. This was before I started checking out on line forums or paying much attention to EQ and MIX (I still don't pay much attention to EQ or MIX) so I did not buy into the positive hype then and I don't buy into the negative hype now.

For me the 737 is a flat very 2D piece of kit, the preamp is okay but there are better units out there, the compressor is about useless and the EQ is serviceable but again there are all kinds of things I would choose before it.

If I were the original poster I would get 2 Seventh Circle Audio A12's, an OSA 8 space rack and a couple of used 550b API EQ's, MUCH better sound quality for around the same cash (did the math in my head but I could be off). You do give up a compressor in the deal but the Avalon compressor is nothing to write home about and you have room to expand with the SCA and the OSA racks.

Did I mention the fact that the OSA and SCA audio solution would sound better than anything Avalon I have ever heard.

That is a good chunk of change..... choose wisely…..

Not a fan of either. As far as Avalon stuff goes, I occasionally like the 737 on something, and often love what the 747 does on my mixbus, but that's about it. As far as pre's go, I'd recommend the Vipre. Mercenary currently has a monthly deal on them for 2,450. Killer price, IMO, and if I wasn't saving up for some other stuff, I'd pick it up. Other than that, there's also the Drawmer 1969(I love this piece), which has a great compressor and pre section, for a comparable price as well. For the money that the Avalon gear is going for, you could get some really interesting, better(IMO) stuff.

Exsanguis>wow... a lot of - feedback on the Avalon stuff. Both pieces are listing for $3000. I think Mercenary sells them for Approx $2500 ( Have to check with Fletcher). I could get them for $1600 a piece , but I hear you guys. Just because it's on sale doesn't mean I should buy (Sort of Like buying a DeLorean automobile)

Honestly I've never heard the 2022. I have heard the 2044 comp and it appeared to be clean and airy.

Damn I wish I could get a Vac Rack!!!(Eq,Pre, and compressor)

Thanks for all the thoughts!!

I'm with ya'll on the 737s and other Avalon gear like that. You can do much better with your money. I used a 737 on a project one time, and I tried on eveything and finally gave up and just used the APIs that were there instead. The pre sounded cloudy, the eq section was so smooth I couldn't even hear it, and the compressor was from puss-ville. People think just cause something has a tube that it's going to be better. The kind of tube gear that we all want, most of us can't afford. Get some pieces with transformers and class A amplifiers and you'll never sell them.

That's what it goes for used.

Its pillowy and soft.

And it tends to bring out a lot of the low mids(200-300hz).

For this reason it tends to put a haze on the audio that can make things sound worse.

I had one for a while and thought it was ok.

Got rid of it and have never looked back.

Nothing spectacular.

And in my rig if its not spectacular or do one thing really well it goes...

...to the curve.

Yea, I passed on the Avalons some of my decision was prompted by the discussion
here (Thanks for the feedback) thumbsup ....most of my decision was based on not knowing the Avalon units (I don't want to be stuck with them if I don't like them)

I'm 80% sure I'm going to shoot for my first option, (2x Chandler LTD 1's)
20% for 2x pendulum Quartets.

How about my nearly new A DESIGNS MP-2R tube pre ?
See the classified section for details ... triple mint condition !!!

This is a top of the line unit ... and a very very nice "tube IN - tube OUT" mic pre that differs substantially from much of the solid state pre's out there ... I'd also say its comparable to the FERN's ... my .02 ...

jls.
