Favorite bass distortion ?

I've been mixing alot of heavy metal, that really needs distorted bass. I've been admiring the In Flames bass sound (listening mostly to Clayman and Come clarity)

I'm doing bass DI into RME Fireface400, So I'm preferably looking for a software solution.

I've been running my bass trough Guitar Rig 3 with a pretty brutal preset, But I lacked the clarity of the bass, So i've ended up Using stillwell 1983 EQ and Major Tom compressor on the bass track for depth and a bit of click in the bass, then Sending the bass signal (pre-inserts) trough my guitar rig for heavy distorted sound, Lo-cutting everything under 2-300hz (since I'm getting the bottom from the un-distorted track)

What is your favorite way of distorting bass, And how could I get close the In Flames bass sound ?

Are you running a cleaner sound parallel with the distortion?

My (non-software) faves - Ibanez Phat Hed and Fulltone Bass Drive - they both have clean tone sitting underneath the dist tone

sansamp pedal....i like that ampeg plugin too...but i aways prefer a distortion out of compression than an effect on the bass....
