The Mindprint Tips Thread or not. i know there's only a few of us Mindprint DTC users here and lord knows i ain't one of the more knowledgeable ones. so i figure i'd ask my fellow slutz who use this piece of gear for some tips. particularly when it's being used a two channel comp. besides tracking duties here's my "summing" chain: out of my DAW via motu mk3 analog 1/4" outs into an API 8200a mixer out to Mindprint DTC - some eq'ing done at this stage back into Apogee Rosetta and out of the Rosetta via optical and back into DAW into a final stereo track - sometimes a Waves L2 and LMB are present. the one thing i do have a real problem with is the compressor section, i can't get that thing to do what i want. it's either too compressed and the whole mix starts to pump or it doesn't cut it and i have to use the waves L2 for gain make-up purposes. i know it's not an API 2500 but it should do better than this, or am i smoking the pipe? any Mindprint DTC slutz out there using it in a similar fashion? peace! FM FM was not was.

thanks for the reply. i just went to the mindprint forum and actually someone else had a similar question but the response he got from them was pretty lame. hmmmm... FM FM can be built using regular household items.

| I have a DTC, but I am still getting the hang of the thing. I don't know if I would want to use the compressor on a whole mix. The DTC's compressor is just not like normal compressors, it works great on instruments but I don't think it can be controlled enough to be used on a whole mix.

I also got the DTC. The compression section is damn strange, but definitely add warmth and special texture to what's processed in. I love the preamp and EQ (this one is incredible, I love it, you can do whatever you want), and begin to know how to use it well, but the optical compressor is still a mystery. I'd only use it as : - a limiter before going to the converters, very useful. - a compressor for the bass (roundness and warmth), vocals, and accoustic instruments... The compressor is quite extreme and most of the time the knobs are near 0, I don't want to mess up my mixes. I never tried it as a master bus compressor, but I guess it would work with very careful settings. I'd rather use the EQ in a mastering. The DTC is a great channel on every point, it's original. Love it That unit is not very known but works just great.

thanks guys. yeah, i tried it again on a whole mix last night and the compressor it's just really hard to get a handle on. it's almost as if yo have to "ride' it like a fader. on the other hand i do like the EQ section on the whole mix. i have to do my own "mastering" since i can't afford to go to a real studio/engineer. i love my mindprint, maybe this is the are where it just doesn't cut, which is fine, it does so well on everything else i'd be an idiot to complain. i think dim light got it right. i need something like a Fatso or a real two bus comp... my gear slut stirs again... FM FM, as a matter of fact, actually owns the road.

DTC tube variations..... Have any of you replaced the tubes in the mindprint DTC? Have you had any comments on the sonic changes, better/worse? Just curious as to what options are available. thanks, tommy

i posted this another on another thread but just to keep things tidy i will repost my findings here. in short, the Amperex tubes and the Mindprint together sound FANTASTIC! if any of you are interested i posted an mp3 on my site: http://thenoradsprings.net/faith.html if you want to enter the site thru the front door, here's the url, you will need Flash Player 8. (there's a link on the splash page) http://thenoradsprings.net/ i can't believe it took me this long to figure this out, now i gotta spend some quality time doing some remixing/summing with the new tubes. hope this is helpful to other Mindprint owners. FM FM is the proud inventor of the three martini lunch.
