I have a mixer, preamp, tascam tape and cd deck, and a mic. What else do I need to record vocals onto my computer?

What type of mixer?

What type of preamp?

What type of Mic?

What software (DAW) are you using?

Have you got a sound card/Audio interface?

1. Yamaha mx 12/6

2. Whatever kind is on this rack

3. MXL 770

4. Acid Pro 7

5. No special sound card/audio interface, just the regular ole standard onboard sound card.

What hardware do I need to hook this into my computer?

You Need a soundcard (i doubt you want to use the built in one in your computer) If you're just going to record 2 channels at a time and are on a budget, go with an M-Audio Fast Track or any other entry level usb/firewire sound card.

As mentioned you will need some sort of interface to connect your mixer to your computer... maybe consider something from M audio as it wont break the bank and has two inputs/preamps so you can either connect your stereo outs from your mixer into the m audio interface which in turn connects to your pc through usb or you could connect your mic straight into this therefore bypassing your mixer ect... you can pick these up from as little as £83

24-bit/96kHz audio interface with dual mic/instrument preamps balanced/unbalanced analog I/O S/PDIF coaxial; MIDI I/O ¼” headphone output with level control and A/B source switch Mac and PC compatible

and this also includes a copy of ableton live lite free which might come in usefull.

M-AUDIO - Fast Track Pro - 4 x 4 Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface with Preamps

Since most audio interfaces now come with built in preamps and your only recording vocals for the time being, i would recommend selling your current rig (mixer, preamp and tascam tape deck) and go for something with better built in pres such as something from focusrite like the saffire pro 40 which will set you back around £399.99

if in future you want to record multiple vocalists or even a guitar, bass etc then you will have the ability to do this, providing you invest in more mic's etc
