Thread Starter | Blink 182 Snare Sound
I hate to admit it, but as squashed and un-musical some of this pop-punk is, I just love the way the snare sounds on a lot of these records. Nice and poppy, yet warm and full, and very crisp. Anybody have an idea on how they achieve this sound? If you're not sure the sound I'm talking about just listen to any Blink 182 album that's been made in the last couple of years.

Yep. Probably like 99% of modern rock or pop records these days. But even then, if the room/overheads don't sound good, it still sounds hoaky.

Well I know for a fact that Jerry Finn and his usual engineer Joe McGrath are fairly anal about sounds...when they go to a studio basically they bring all of their own gear (mics, pre's, outboard, patchbay) and all of their own cables and just run it all through the board as a moniter desk. Jerry has a rack of Mastering Lab pre's so thats probably the pre or maybe his martecs, then he put it through a GML 8200, to eq...hope this helps

Theres a lot of videos that show the recording of blink's last album on there site. I read somewhere that they used an api board for the recording ( I think you can see it in the video if you look real close). Another thing is that when I listen to that album the drums that where mixed by T.L.A sound different from the one mixed be A. W and they both sound different from the ones mixed by J.F. I guess this means they all use different samples, hé, hé... I find this album very interesting to see how different mixers can effect a record, You can also find this on the last sum 41. |

Almost all of Travis Barker's sound comes from his playing, and a stellar drum tech. I've worked with him several times and never used any audix mic's except for the floor tom. The only "trick" involved is making it sound like what it sounds like in the live room in the CR room. Seriously, I had double digit mic's set up and ended up using the kick (fet47), snare (sm57), OH's (Royer122's, Coles, or Earthworks V77's- the cards) and Room mic (U87). Done deal. Cinch. No idea how others went about it (I didn't work on ANY Blink182 stuff), but my personal experence is that he is the most talented 'punk rock' drummer I've ever worked with and THAT's his sound, not the engineer's or producer's.
