Thread Starter | Al Schmitt at the Grammy Museum
Last night the Recording Academy hosted a night with Al Schmitt at the Grammy Museum. A true gentleman with a wicked sense of humor and one of the most talented recording engineers / mixers in the business. He's recorded and mixed everyone from Duke Ellington to Dr. John. Frank Sinatra (Duets) to Toto. Henri Mancini, George Benson, Natalie Cole and hundreds of others. He gave a most valuable piece of information to the audience about how to get the incredible sounds he is known for. Listen. Go into the room and hear the drum, the guitar, the piano, the vocalist. When asked what types of E.Q. and compression he uses on drums, he simply said "I don't...I hear where it sounds best and put the mic there". It was a great evening. Many thanks to the Los Angeles recording academy for putting it on and to Al, Natalie Cole, George Benson and Steve Lukather for their insights and amusing stories.

I've briefly met the man at one of the AES shows and he seems really cool and with a great sense of humor. Interesting comment on the EQ / compression on drums, working with heavier rock bands though means you cannot necessarily subscribe to that way of working (and expect it to sound on par with other recordings). For jazz and light rock you could definitely get away with that. War |

I've had the pleasure of working with Al on one project, and I run in to him pretty much any time I'm working at Capitol. Truly one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, AND a total bad ass. dd

Thread Starter | When you have a room full of everyone from Roy Thomas Baker, Ed Cherney, Geoff Emerick and a few dozen other of the greats paying their respects, you've pretty much reached the zenith of the profession.
