Thread Starter | KRK Series 2 Monitors
Hello everyone. This is my first post, although I've been an permiscuously reading this forum for some time. It's nice to finally be a member. I'm about to take the plunge and get myself some KRK Series 2 monitors. I've tried the V8's (and love them), but unfortunately haven't yet heard the V6's. Reading other people's comments in this forum has led me to believe that I'd be better off with the V6's, but two things concern me: 1) V8's are a staple in pro studios whereas the V6's are not (as far as I know); 2) I do a lot of DI bass tracking, and therefore need a good bass response. I'm into guitar-driven rock music. My primary concern is tracking, although I will also use these for some mixing. Unfortunately, I won't be able to try out the V6's before ordering them. So my questiong is am I going to get enough bass (and volume in general) out of the V6's for tracking? Do you all agree I would be better off with the V6's despite my concerns? I'm happy with the V8's, but if the V6's are really better, I'd be happy to pay less and get them. Thanks for your help. Glad to be a gear slut. mcballs |

Welcome to GS! I'm probably one of those guys you've seen saying this, but in case I'm not... We picked up the line recently, and did a recent shootout of the RP and V series lines. The difference between the V8 and V6 to everyone in the room was: V8's get loud as HELL (but V6 get quite loud enough) and there wasn't as much separation of say a kick drum and bass guitar hitting at the same time. There is more bass in the V8, but the low mid response to me wasn't as defined as the V6. The V6 have plenty of low end, in my opinion enough for any mixing situation except where you might desire a sub for some hip hop (I mix hip hop on HR824's with no sub). The V6 just had this natural overall sound that beat out all the others. BUT, if the V8's are working for you in your room then why switch? Half the battle is learning the monitor chain and the room and knowing what to expect when something leaves your door. My HR824's could probably be whupped by something else I could bring in, but I know them in my room and my mixes are translating and I know what to expect so I've been hesitant to drop more cash. I would suggest the V8's for hip hop deep bass type mixing, and V6 for rock type use. But if you're mixes are translating I suggest staying with the V8's and saving the hassle of selling those and buying new V6. War |

Hi War. Ya, you were one of the guys I've read a lot about the KRK's from. Maybe it was unclear, but I don't own either the V8's or the V6's at this point - I'm trying to decide which ones. So selling the V8's and going with the V6's is not an issue... I just want to get the best ones for my needs (mostly tracking rock music - I need enough low end for tracking bass, but not a huge amount). Cheers, mcballs |

| Power amp buzz
Im quite happy with the sound of the V6 series 2 , I mean whaddya want for a three hundred dollar speaker, but mine have a low grade buzz, had it since I took them out of the box. Unfortunately I was on tour when I bought them and it was too much hassle to deal with so I just turn em up loud. I think its a power supply issue so beware of that!

| You'd probably do more for your bass response by careful placement than by 8" vs 6" woofers. The V6 were more articulate than the V8 when I compaired them. I ended up with the ST6, myself. I already have some amps around and I thought they were a little more detailed than the V6 (and less than 1/2 the price). Since I dont listen to much at over 100dB for more than a minute or two, ultimate loudness isn't even close to a factor for me. -tINY |

Hey, I own a pair of V8's and love them. After using them for 2 years I added a KRK S10 subwoofer and must say that everything sounds much better now. Maybe you could get a V6 and a subwoofer. That would rock. Otherwise I would go for V8. But that's'just me. Last week I had to mix a song in another studio with the V6 and no SUB and I felt "lost", if you know what I mean... Anyway, love KRK! Good luck! thumbsup |

I can vouch for the V8s. I have a pair and they sound good for near fields under a grand. Hey warhead I was in Columbia today doing some work. It was even hotter than Charlotte. |

mcballs, you should look into the Dynaudio BM5A's if you're looking in the price range of the V8's and V6's. I was a KRK user and enthusiast for several years. When the V8's went to around $1K I thought they were easily one of the best monitors in that price range. The BM5A's changed all that, and raise the bar for price-vs-performance in an under-$1K monitor. The imagery, clarity and definition are much better with the BM5A's. And listening fatigue is history.

The series 1 V8s are great. In fact all the series 1 KRKs that I've heard are great. And all the series 2 KRKs I've heard sound cheap/grainy/lacking in detail. I was very very gutted when I first A/B d series 2 / series 1 KRKs. |

For what I do the Rokit 5's work well and sound great. I guess it all depends on where it is you are using them, room treatment, and what you're using them for. I probably would go with something more high end if I did more than demo's in my home studio. I've heard lots of good stuff about Dynaudio's too. Then again what do I know. I'm just a slack jawed yockel.

I have the series 1 V8s (they're okay). When I got them, I thought , yeah, 8 is better than 6 (because it's more). Now I have a (slightly) better understanding of why the top mixers mix on NS10s or something similar, at a low volume. And speaker placement is crucial, plus the size of your room (and how close you are going to be to the speakers). |
