Sub $100 Plugins

I've noticed recently that someone sold some Massey plugins on this forum. None of my business but I started thinking:

Would we (as users) be upset if the companies that sell these cheaper plugins told us that we couldn't resell their product?

I've been looking at a bunch of $99 plugins recently (Glue, Redline Reverb etc) and this thought came to mind.

Obviously we get mad at companies like Waves who make it very difficult to sell their very expensive bundles but does price matter?

I don't know any of these companies policies but I was curious. Would you be OK with having to keep your $99 plugin if no sale was allowed? Especially since they give very fair demo times.

Provided that I could demo the product for a while before buying, I'd have no problem with a 'no resale' $99 plugin. I'd be more concerned about support and future upgrades.

Waves should make it easier to resell their stuff especially concerning the major bucks involved--hell, I probably would have sold off my bundles if it weren't such a PITA.

no. simply cause i think that i should have the right to sell all that i own.

but i only sell plugins when i have them twice or if i have to change my daw-setup. i´m demoing my plugs properly, so if i choose them, i need them more than a week...

The Massey plugins are $69-89 and worth the price ten times over. I would not be the least upset if I wasn´t allowed to re-sell. More expensive plugins, yes.

What I really would like to see though, is every plugin company letting me rent the plugins like you can with digidesign. It would be brilliant.

My thinking is that this could be a bridge between buying and renting.

No complaints here from not being able to sell cheaper plugins. In fact, I don't think I'll ever try and sell any plugs unless I ditch PT all together.

I do think that renting plugs is a nice idea...... especially if it were a "rent-to-own" situation. I do both tracking and mixing. There's times when I'll go 3 months without doing any serious mixes. If I could just "rent" the plugs each time I went to mix, and that eventually allowed me to own them, I'de probably have a much bigger plugin collection.

You don't own the plugin. You own and agreed to a license to use the plugin.

I think Massy shouldn't allow his plugins to be resold. As someone else said they are easily worth 10x their price.

FYI, URS does this!

read what you wrote.
If we're simply buying a license to use a plug-in, shouldn't we be able to sell that license if we decide to for whatever reason?

I think so. And it's good service on Steve Massey's part to do that.

Yeah, too bad I didn't really like much of what they had to offer.

I agree. It's great that they allow it.

But I would think it would incentivize companies to keep their prices down if they didn't have to deal with transfers and what not.

I absolutely agree. As does the first-sale-doctrine ( First-sale doctrine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

The term "licensed" instead of "sold" is used by software vendors largely to bypass this law. It doesn't usually hold up in court, and nor should it.

But they get around it by making it a PITA.
