Local Studios/Rehearsal Spaces in Minneapolis

Hi All,

So I just moved to Minneapolis and I am wondering if there are any local studios/rehearsal spaces that you recommend?

Also, can you recommend good places for live music? So far I have checked out the dakota jazz club, which was nice, any other recommendations?

There are a TON of great places....

What kind of music do you play/enjoy?

There are plenty of live music venues, but it always depends on who's playing. Grab a City Pages, the free local paper that's at most every store and coffeehouse, and look to see what's happening this week in music. And welcome home!

I'll second the Shitty Pages, pretty much the only thing that they're good for are the show listings. As far as rehearsal spaces, there are more crappy ones than good ones, so maybe find some players that you trust and find out what's working for them.

As far as practice spaces go:

Nice ones:

Kohler Sound
Profile Music (Awesome vibe, pricey)
The space underneath the gay bar on Jackson street in St. Paul

Crappy ones:

City Sound (any of them, where I practice)
The space on Prior Ave in St. Paul
The space on North Washington Ave in Minneapolis
The spaces right above Station 4 in St. Paul (but if you're a metal band you will automatically get gigs just on the virtue of being in a space right above a heavily booked bar).

Studios:

I've heard A440 is nice, I've heard good albums come out of that one
Atomic K (if it still exists, who knows) is at Profile music, I've heard good things about that one too...there's another studio in that practice space too.
I have recorded at Signature Tone, nice vibe, good equipment
I wanted to record at Sterling Sound, couldn't afford it
I wanted to record at Winterland as well, but if I can't afford Sterling...
There are about 10 billion studios here due to IPR/McNally Smith, so, my list is by no means exhaustive.

All,

This is an old thread, but I still haven't had the time to check out the rehearsal spaces you recommended. I called Profile Music Center and asked what their hourly rate for a drum room would be, they said $40 for 2 hours. Which seems expensive. I'm gonna also call City Sound.

How much is a reasonable rate to pay per hour for a drum room? In case I rent the room for a whole month, can I leave my equipment (drums, recording stuff) there, how is the security like in these places? Sorry I am not from the US so I don't know much about these things.

Any other places I should check it just for practice other than City Sound and Profile Music?

Unrelated question: I wanna start looking for a band to play with as well, where do you think is a good place to start?

Thank you!
