Anyone here ditch 500 series and go w/ Mackie Onyx?

Hey guys, just curious if any of you have done this? I really miss having a mixer in front of me and have heard great things about this board from a buddy that has one. He also has a large amount of high end pres and cannot speak highly enough. I don't have the funds to add a mixer and keep my box, so this looks like a good way to go. I can also unload my RME converter and simplify things.

He uses his Onyx board for off-site tracking and says that it works great with PT 8. I love my 500 series pres, but the option of having a nice board in front of me is very tempting. I have read a lot of slutz on here have been using the board from top to bottom to record projects with great success.

If I do this, it will be with the EQ mod pre-fader, so I can use it with PT. I know that the wait is long for these boards due to Mackie's changes, but I can always place the order and wait for it to arrive.

Let me know if any of you have experience with this board and PT 8, and how you like it. THanks

I don't know what PT8 has anything to do with it, no device that doesn't say "Digidesign" or "M-Audio" is going to communicate with it inside of a DAW. Maybe he is just taking the output and hitting a 002 with an Onyx mixer.

What's up Warren, I just called for you, but spoke with one of your guys. He was really helpful and had great things to say. I just thought I would go for your opinion, since you have such extensive experience with the 500 series stuff and the Onyx. It's cool that you guys have the EQ mod. option too. I think that would be a great option to have.

So, what is the best way to get tracks into PT via the Onyx, is this possible? I should have had my buddy clarify it for me. He probably did what you were saying.

I wish Digidesign didn't control the hardware aspect like they do. It sure would make things much more flexible. Tell me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you need to record viz Onyx into another program, and the import wavs. into PT? What a PITA. Let me know if I'm way off base. THanks

I worked weekends for about a year and a half doing sound at a place that uses a 24 ch Mackie Onyx. It worked well for the venue, but assuming you're talking about the 500 rack in your avatar, I've gotta say NO FRIGGIN WAY! The Mackie does not sound better IMO. Unless you REALLY require a mixer or the extra channels, I'd encourage you to build on what you've got.

cool man, thanks, sounds like the Mackie is a no go w/ PT anyways. The lunchbox is great. Maybe I will just add another kind of external mixer. We shall see.
