You're talking about having a reference for tones? IMO, if you utterly, totally, completely trust your monitoring environment and have done a zillion tunes there which translate perfectly, then, no, it's maybe only a 50% mistake. LOL!

But if you lack any confidence at all in your room or your monitors, then I'd sure use a reference. I'm in a bright room right now which lies about the bass, so I'm going back and forth with reference CDs all day, specifically to compare the low stuff.
