mid range buildup in mixdown

For a song I recently did....

I've got two rythum guitar tracks panned L/R, and a lead guitar a little off center with a short delay on the other side. Then some bass and a drum mix. Basic lead guitar type song...

I usually get the guitars mic'd and EQ'd the way I want them (through a FATSO too) - of course the midrange is someone pronounced on distorted guitars (no mid scoop here). Using mytek AD. I am using an old tapco 6100 mixer for the mic pres, at least for now until I get some funds together...

I sum through a dangerous Dbox (using mytek converters) and find all that guitar midrange just dominates on the two track mix. So I end up scooping out the mids to allow the high end to breathe more, and that's more like it.

So, is the answer to kill the midrange while tracking and mixing? Guitars live there, so for the tone to be what it needs to be I can't kill all that midrange....or can I? Doing so seems to make everything kinda flat.

Perhaps the tapco is an issue too, but they aren't THAT bad...

Sound doesn't actually "Build Up".
There may be too much of it, but it doesn't grow and grow. It's not like a dam.

So in our case I'd say cut the mids from one guitar to let the others through. Mid range is pretty important in guitars. Bite/Grit/Fangs etc...

You may be better tracking two complimentary rather than clashing sounds.

One suggestion:

Try panning both rhythm guitars to one side and use a stereo delay panned hard left & right with different settings(shorter on one than the other).
