does anybody in here have less than $10K worth of equip?

It seems like I'm the only guy here on a budget, lol

Event 20/20 Monitor Speakers - $750
SR Audio SR8 Preamp - $100
Rode NT2 Condensor Mic- $400
Shure SM58 Mic - $100
(2) Shure SM57 Mics - $180
Shure PGDMK6 Drum Mics - $400
Korg Triton - $1,500
DigiDesign 002 Console - $2,200
AKG K240S Headphones - $100
Cables, Etc - $150
Soundpoof Vocal Booth - $750

$6630

i mean, obviously, I know I'm running trash, but it seems like you guys all have $100k studios setup. I wanna see where my real budget guys are, what kinda setups they have.

Also: any recomendations on where to start next would be great, I eventually would like to build this into a respectable studio.

Here's my list:

Mackie HR824
Digi 001
RME ADI-2 AD/DA
Manley Vari-Mu
AT4050/CM5
3 SM57's
1 SM58 Beta
3 Sennheiser drum mics
AKG D112
Audix D6
2 ART TPS Pre's
P4 3.2GHz with Asus P4P800 Motherboard, 180GB HD

That's probably well under $10K, but I don't feel like adding it up.

I never added up my gear but I guess the d8b alone would be 10k, that's what I paid for it new quite a few years ago. Anyway...

D8b w/ Apogee clock card and 1 UFX card
Sony Vaio PC
15" LCD Monitors (2)
Alesis HD-24
PTLE / MBox
Cubase SX
Sony Vegas
Waves Platinum
Alesis Monitor Ones
Alesis RA-100
MOTU 2408 (2)
M-Audio Duo
DBX 576
Behringer ADA-8000
Behringer Autocom
Focusite Voicemaster
Lexicon MPX1
Yamaha REV 500
Alesis Q2 (retired)
Tascam DA-20 MKII
AT4055
Rode NTK
Rode NT1
V69 Mogami Edition
Oktava MC-012 (2)
Shure Beta 52
SM 57's (6)
Another $200 tube mic I can't recall right now..
"Off Brand" studio drum kit whose name I don't remember...
3 Additional Snares
Sony MDR 7506 Headphones (6)
Fender Jazz Bass
Proteus 2000
Korg X5 DR
Roland D5
Fruity Looops Studio
Wavelab
A "gaggle" of other plugins, samples and stuff"
8 USB port midi device
Room treatment (bass traps, foam, plexiglass etc...)

Reading this list one thing becomes apparent, I don't own any "high end" outboard gear and a lot of the old standby's like the RA-100 and the Monitor Ones are still serving me well. Oh... I love my Sony headphones!

Oh, I'm sure its under $10k if its just recording gear. Here's some estimations in USD:

Mics:
Apex 420x2: $400
AT4047:$400
Beyer M99:$350
M88:$150
M201:$100
Revox 3500:$100
Shure Sm91:$100
Tape Op Ribbons:$200 (pair)

=$1800 ?

Console:
Ramsa DA7 $1200

Cables $500

Stereo Amp NAD2200: $300?
Boston Acoustics CR8 Speakers: $350

Computer:
$400 (athlon xp3200+,etc)
$200 for Motu 2408

There, thats under FIVE thousand.

I think I spent more money getting there though with upgrades and stuff. But I spend a lot more money on musical instruemnts, thats for sure. Amps? Guitars? Drums? That stuff adds up.

No you're not,,
I'm doing a radio mix for a band that had Andy Wallace mix the singles on their previous album and I'm using-

NS10's with a Bryston 2b and a cheapo consumer sub,
Mix Plus w/ ADAT Bridge (the 20 bit one! Anyone have a 24 bit one they'll sell me cheap?)
G4 1.25ghz
Mackie Big knob
and a cheap home stereo
all set up in my garage with DIY acoustic panels.

Everything was purchased second hand for bargain basement prices except the Big Knob.

Before this week:

Digi 001
G4
2 AKG 414s
3 SM 57s
1 KSM 27
1 MXL V67
2 chnls neve clone
TSR-8 8 track
TEAC and Mackie mixers (junk).
Event 20/20s

Id say maybe around $4-5 depending on new or used prices (mostly bought used).

BUT I just added about $5000 worth of gear this week, so Im getting into that plus 10k bracket. Im sure the quality of my recordings will take a while to catch up though ;)

Smile

just thought somebody will be interested in what it is to be a third world slut:

me and my partner run this place in chennai, india. composition is his first language, and production is mine. this is 'third world' and $1 will buy us both a great meal. i am very generous and pay $10/month to the cleaning lady, $30/month to the tea boy, $60/month to my assistant and $30/month for a 'once a week' accountant. $150 rent for 650 prime square feet of space. on a good month we turn over $3500, but we can make do with $2000.
our work gets heard several times a day on television and radio and we are quite well known in the circuit we operate in. you can certainly call us self sufficient professional musicians.

to the point:

yamaha msp5 + hsu research sub
motu 2408 mk3
uad1, cubase, powercore, waves platinum bundle
se z5600, cad m179, shure sm 58, avenson sto 2, cascade xyz ldc
rme quadmic pres
dbx 168 compressor (no one seems to have heard of this, but it suits me fine)
boss se70
behringer little mixer and headphone distribution amp (i never hear it, only the 'talent' does :)

yamaha an1x keyboard
stylus rmx, arturia mini moog, ni b4, battery, fm7, pro 53, korg legacy.
lots of sample libraries from the old days ('97-'02).

a couple of additional computers with random sound cards and speakers for the spare room where the assistant and accountant do their thing.

theres a lot of soundproofing in my little control room and iso booth though, and everything sounds clearer than most 'pro' studios here.

so you see, i'm so lowly that your average 'low end theory' guy's setup will better mine :), however i am sort of clued into every piece of gear that get gets talked about here, and i'm still young ; one day i'm going to have all of 'em

cheers
self.

a) hurt?
b) irritate the f^^k out of you?
c) influence future purchases?

Not at all. There was nothing near 10k that could do what the d8b could when I bought it. Contrary to what some would say, it's a great console. I know of one guy who's won Emmy's for mixing TV shows on the d8b including the hit show 24. http://larold.com

If you've never used one (or seen a pro use one) you wouldn't really appreciate it's power. Just for kicks, name a new digital console for sale now that has the following features...

Full 24 channel meter bridge
Daw control with metering (HUI)
72 total audio channels at mixdown, standard not optional
The best automation system I've ever seen on any console. Really.
Subgroups (uh... The Sony doesn't have any I'm told)
Unlimited channel patching (line to tape to FX etc.) to "borrow" dsp
Very, very good compressors on 48 ch's with OS 5.
24 full sized faders
12 effects sends
UV22 HR
Session backup via ethernet

Now... how much does that new board cost? How much for the "accessories"? $1200 meter bridge? $3-400 each for additional I/O cards that should be standard?

What is it missing in comparison to the newer boards? Touch sensitive faders and 96k. That's about it. I'm sure some of the newer digital boards have converters that sound "better". I giggle when I see some of the VGA displays and automation systems on some of these newer 5k consoles. A used d8b for costs 3k now and is a GREAT value if you find one wothout problems. I don't regret buying a new one back then. If you can't do a pro mix on it... "it aint the board!".

I'm not sick at all. :) I love my d8b. It was worth every cent. It produces great mixes and my clients love it.

Funny, when I started writing this I thought I wouldn't come close to 10 f***ing thousand dollars...funny, this is almost the exact amount on my credit card...

Nonetheless, I have what I consider to be a pretty decent setup for the $$$. My next priority is to build out a dedicated TREATED room and get some monitors. Oh, and pay off my damn credit cards!

SM57: $80
PODxt: $250
Apogee SPDIF cables x 2: $70

oh god am I on a budget.
Just about everything was either bought used, on ebay, or got a great deal on. I don't think I paid list for anything.
Computer:
Athlon 64 3200+
ASUS mb
1gb RAM
1 80gb HD
1 250gb HD
etc

Presonus Firepod
M-Audio DMP3
RNC
Samson headphone amp
Wharfedale 8.2a monitors
using cubase le that came with the firepod =(
but i did spend the money on drumagog, which helped out quite a bit
lots of free plug ins

Rode K2
MD421
2 Audio Technica At4040
3 SM57
Audix D6
some other cheap ass mics
some foam thrown on the walls to at least tame the horrid little room
the absolute cheapest cables you can find

thats pretty much it.
next on my list is to replace the firepod with some good converters, an api lunchbox with a couple of pres, and more RNCs ;)

I just pulled all kinds of triggers. I worked some sweet deals so I am way under 10k for my modest setup

Great River MP2NV
Crane Song Hedd
Mac dual 1.8 G5 (3 gig of RAM...woohoo)
Lynx AES16
SX3
Gefell M300's (matched pair)
Gefell MT71S
Beyer M-160
M-Audio Keystation
Scarbee Vintage Keyboard gold bundle

$7600-ish

I'll spend about that much on my monitoring next year...for now it's cans, but I can do what I need to do with cans. Drums and mixing will be handled elsewhere.
