Neumann...heck give me an SM58. U2 Live in the studio...

YouTube - U2 - No Line On The Horizon Live in Dublin [HD - High Quality]

No Line on the Horizon...live in the studio...reminding us that gear can't sing...and that sometimes the most simple answer is the most brilliant.

Wonderful, thank you for posting this. I love this new record, only a handful of bands can capture music like this.

Apparently almost all of Bono's vocals have been cut with Beta58s on the U2 albums from the last 20 years or so.

yes, i don't know where i heard this, but apparently he (bono) likes to record whilst moving around with a handheld. on top of this he prefers to use monitors instead of headphones too.

Four guys in a room playing music. You can't beat that. Very inspiring.

Whether you like Bono or not, he's a great rock singer. That was a pretty good vocal take off the cuff. Holding the guitar didn't even confuse him.

I'm not quite sure how Bono got a signature guitar. He should have a signature 58.

U2 can rock the world

...well said. Four guys in a room playing music. Brilliant. Live . Music. I have always loved Bono's vocals on their recorded music...I know that his passion, charisma and style have a lot to do with his unique vocal signature...so it makes when smile when I see him using a 58...whether you like them or not...you have to respect the last great supergroup....they are pros.

Is it just me, or does Bono look like Robin Williams with his hair cut?

Not quite the "singer" that Bono is, but Henry Rollins was the same way when I recorded his vocals. SM58, handheld, jumping around in the vocal booth, etc. He even brought his own 58 with him to the studio.

Kings of Leon's new album used a 57 for all the lead vocals.

Michael Angelo could make a masterpiece with rubbish.

And Picaso could make rubbish out of anything.

I hate when I read people's signal chains for drums they are really proud of and the chain could be traded for a small house...but the drums in the track sound like crap...

Before I heard the No Lines Album I unfortunately read the huge thread on it on GS .

So when I heard the album for the first time i was listening through Gearslutz' interpretation of it...

The third time I listened to it, I actually started to hear the words, then during "Moment of Surender" I actually surrendered all the bull that GS forum users had put in my mind and I had an experience Like I hadn't had for many years from an album. "Surrender" and "Unknown Caller" together are a work of significant art in themselves....

So all of you who had a quick listen and made up your mind. I urge you to just Surrender

....and have another listen with a blank mind and no expectation. I know these days it is hard to find the time to listen to a whole album...so catch a train instead of driving and and make sure it is at least a one hour trip...and have a good listen and let go...

Well said...I hope that people can put their bias aside and really listen. I am really struggling with how professionals could say the album sucks....whether you like their music or not...they are pros and this album is very well done. Bono also proves that you can make great records with everyday joe gear...much to the chagrin of the Abbey Road gurus...

I don't know many true pros who knock the 57 and 58, and its cousin the SM7, for rock vocal duties. They are classics!

So I might get alot of slack for saying this...and it should be taken with a grain of salt.

When your in a situation where you want a 47 sometimes a 58 into a neve will get you to the same spot. It will sound different...but in a more broad stroke sort of way...they are similar.

Ive recorded alot of acoustics with a 57 and a 47 neck/bridge...i often find that when i pull the mics up they are similar or I like the 58 more.

The 58 is a great mic...its got presence while not being harsh...its fat without lacking definition. Thats a good mic!

BUT!!! you need a good pre. Hearing a 58 into an mbox was possibly one of the most disappointing times in my life.
