I'm not really a Coldplay fan but I went to see them at Brixton Academy at the beginning of the Viva La Vida tour (free tickets!)... it was their first gig in a couple years, I think, and whether you like 'em or not the show was pretty good and their chops were pretty good - not that they're the world's greatest musicians but they can play their own stuff no problem and make it sound good. So I don't think their faults lie in their performance ability...

I saw them a couple of years ago in Germany and thought their live sound was pretty good. Chris Martin performed great IMO. But I'm not a Coldplay fan.

I saw them in August in an arena. Decent, but not spectacular, seats.

Coldplay fan or not, it's a show well-worth seeing.

They're one of a handful of bands out there who can afford the "big" production tour. Certainly they can play; absolutely, the sound is top-notch; and the visuals sport the latest technology and innovative aesthetic decisions.

Why wouldn't you go?

You know what...you are way off with this...they're pretty well known for being great live...as usual, it seems that folks are just itching to criticize artists for something....why don't you just stay home and chat with your friends about how everything sucks...there's lots of other folks who can appreciate a good live show.

not a Coldplay fan but i was offered free tix to one of the later shows on a recent tour. i think theyre pretty mediocre musically & performance wise. the show confirmed my opinion of them as a very pedestrian, watered down version of U2, Radiohead, with a lil shoegaze thrown in there. the bulk of the crowd appeared to be into it, lotsa awkward couples where the woman had coaxed some poor dude into buying tix for her "favourite band". they had streamers fall from the ceiling, neat internal projection disco ball lights, lasers, fog, sing along, play a song from the back of the crowd, encore with the first hit, all at the appropriate moments. but anyone who has been to more than a handful of good shows has probably already seen more talented bands pull these standards off with more finesse. to me it all looked/felt very choreographed, forced & slightly uncomfortable. maybe they were tired from a long tour or i'm just jaded by derivative media saturated pop bands, or both.

not a huge Coldplay fan but from what I've heard their live show is all about the drummer. He's sposed to be the force fo the live thing.

really? i thot the drums were boring & predictable, i kept waiting for him to bust loose. Him & the bass player seem very in sync. maybe they're capable of more & tone it down for the band.

stevil hits the nail on the head.

but then again, coldplay doesn't really have many fans per se. so there's not a really die hard bunch to carry the curious onlookers around. Not the bands fault. The feeling I got was Coldplay wishes their concert attendees were a little more die hard, but since they weren't, they had a job to do so they did it.

I'm used to going to metal concerts, where most of the concert goers are fans on the verge of lunacy, or at least know how to give energy to a band. At coldplay, 30-40 yr old hockey moms swaying in their seats, texting, taking pictures with their iphones, hubbies looking at their $9 beer and checking their watches, well....I'm impressed coldplay doesn't whip out their schlongs and start urinating all over their audience to get a reaction. I stood up (in the stairway leading to my seat) to stretch my legs and the people behind me started complaining that I was in their way. The attendant made me stand in the hallway away from the arena itself. Can you imagine complaining about that at a Metallica / Iron Maiden concert?

I did think their sound was good, and their show hit all the marks a show should hit. A lot of thought went into it and you can see very well from anywhere in the house. Your enjoyment, like any concert, depends on what you expect. I was kinda thinking people would be there to really have a great time / party, but it was more like a wine tasting event.

i kinda think it is the bands fault. maybe if they weren't so disney-esque & showed a little soul in their playing, the fans would be more genuine in their appreciation. i dont get the impression thats what theyre all about though. it's not really a rock band in the traditional sence, but a corporate sponsor friendly professional touring company with competent musicians playing well produced, commercial ready, unoffensive material at it's core.

TRUE DAT. They completely sold out for duckets, however their target market does like them. Can't begrudge them that but it may not be a lasting trend. i'm not so sure there is a lack of soul in their playing, as their target market seems to trend towards high priests of ******dom. They did feel slick, that is for sure. Perhaps it was the show I was at. Who knows?

YouTube - Manowar - Metal Warriors =

vs

YouTube - Coldplay @ Amway Arena, Orlando, FL 2008 =

note: obviously, I have been to non-metal concerts, but much smaller venues. Saw Roger Cylne / Peacemakers recently, loved it, and its not headbanger's ball material at all. Enjoy the philharmonic and string quartets. There the appreciation is shown at the end of the material. I dunno, maybe I was wigged out by guys wearing $100 tatty t's and chicks in $200 jeans ignoring the band in front of them.

Coldplay live

I am a fan of Coldplay's (We play Clocks, In My Place and Yellow)...but I think I know what you mean. In the live performance's that I have seen, Chris Martin gets a bit "pitchy". Unlike U2, the guitar is somewhat less featured in their mix...so his vocals really stand out...and the few live performances I have heard were less than stellar. This is almost strictly based on Martin's vocals...the band seemed tight. However, it is almost as though I am expecting Bono (since they sound so much like U2)...and Martin isn't in Bono's league (in my estimation). His voice seems WEAK live...is that what you are hearing?

I've seen them twice. I thought they rocked both times. One of the better live "new" bands in my estimation. U2 is a good band to esteem to be live. Nothing wrong with that!

The performances will be fine.

The sound will be fine.

Unfortunately, the band will be playing Coldplay songs.
