Can anybody recommend a good book about audio engineering techniques, or mixing and what not?

Put a more descriptive subject line on your post?

Bob Katz wrote a fantastic book about mastering, some of which should be applicable for what you are asking. Knowing the mastering process or some of its challenges should be good too, then you're aware of this process and can keep in mind a target for your mix.

Modern Recording techniques was given to me by an engineer that took me under his wing when I was an aspiring to become an engineer. Things have changed a LOT since then, but the book is considered a "standard", so I assume the editions change appropriately with technology.
