Space for male vocal

Not the reverbation but on the eq-side. What are the instruments that will take space (electric guitars etc) and in what areas of the frequency spectrum must the vocal get space? lo-mids? How do you carve out the space?

i'm usually notching a little 240hz out of certain elements and boosting the vocal there. sometimes i add a little 3k as well.

I've found:

240-250Hz, 500hz, 950hz-1.2khz, and 2khz are the frequencies you need to work on to fit in a male vocal.

Be careful with this...The idea that you 'make a hole' for the vocal is sound in some ways, but it's also a recipe for going a bit astray if you're not careful. The vocal, while more important than the instruments, isn't there all the time like they are. Dont compromise the sound of the track. Before you start carving holes into things that you wouldn't otherwise carve, work with the balances and automation (and perhaps a bit of sidechaining) to see if that feels better.

yeah. It may be sidechaining instead of eq but it's still good to know were to look first in the frequency spectrum
