go with your orange dude.. it trounces marshall/mesa etc. you might want to try out a bogner uberkab. they have a layer of dampening at the back that sucks out some mud. comes stock with 2 v30s and 2gt75s so you got a cupla different flavours. but yeah its the only one which would compete with your orange in my experience. i have also heard good things about port city cabs.

say whhhat? Orange would not be my top pick.

For really big I'd go with the mesa oversized. For a little more tightness and less lows I'd go with the Mesa traditional. Splawn cabs are also great.

The orange is better than a marshall, but I personally don't think they can stand up to a Mesa.

I got an Orange 4x12 and it kills ! Best cab I've ever owned .

Everybody that comes over wants to track with it . There hasn't been one guitarist I know that played their rig through it that wasn't impressed .

For speed metal, some of the Randall amps have sounded great with some on board processing and gates.
But for rock, hard rock, punk rock,.....I'll take the JMC 800 w a 1960 cab every time. Most of the guitarists I record plug into this...such an awesme amp, classic, real, smooth, balls, awesome!
I bought this 24 years ago when I was 17, it has been one of my best gear purchases ever.

My vote is that Orange or Mesa is the way to go if you're looking at a V30 based cabinet. A Marshall isn't going to kill you, it's fine, but if you're looking at an Orange cabinet vs. a Marshall for heavy music, I'd personally pick the Orange every time. The VHT and Bogner cabs that have V30s/Greenbacks in them are great choices too!

I own all of them, I don't like Marshall cabs. Mesa's are good with a very predominant midrange honk, which can be nice or not. Orange a really nice big warm cab but the winner for us at the studio is the Bogner Uberkab. Big yet lively, the combo of speakers makes it better then just all V30's IMO.

If you get the Orange cab I'd get wheels it's heavy as sin.

I have a Bogner Ecstasy 4x12 loaded with 2 EV SROs and 2 EVM12Ls. It's not easy to transport, but slays all who get in its path

I am fond of the old Hiwatt cabs loaded with Fane speakers. I also recently had a friend come over with his Marshall plexi reissue which he ran through his new Marshall cab which was loaded with Celestion 70 watt vintage 30s and it really sounded great (more of a hard rock than metal tone though). I am familiar with the sound of that particular amp, and that cab with those speakers really made it come to life. It was really lively compared to his old cab which is a Marshall 4-12 straight cab loaded with (I think) Celestion 60 or 65s. Like night and day.

Orange cabs are the heaviest most awkward cabs for one person to move .

One time I carried it up stairs by myself to a second floor apartment and can't believe my back survived !

Errr.... Have you ever lifted an Orange cab?

They're like.... What's that word I'm looking for.... Oh yes; CARDBOARD!

Marshall Vintage or Classic cabs or Bogner on 5150 head is instant heavy/thrash type metal; Mesa's too expensive for what it sounds like...

yeah mesa is too expensive, tried 2 mesa 2x12 next to the orange, and the orange was a lot more suited for me.

Yes carrying them is a total ****!!!

Same here, I really like my Framus, they are cheap in Europe aswell.

A few summers ago a friend with a real studio organized a small shootout with some cool amps (matchless, vht, diezel, recto, plexi, rivera) and every one of them sounded like a Marshall through a 1960. Through the oversized Mesa they all sounded like they should.

Lessons learned: If you want a Marshall shoud, buy a Marshall cab.

My experience tells me that you can't go wrong with a cab made of wood (not particle board) and equipped with Vintage 30s if you need metal. Be sure to crank your amp up to get the speakers really working.

Hmm, lots of name brands beinig thrown out...not any better than the Avatar stuff guys....you can get a 4x12 with two v30's and two of whatever else you want pretty much, be it greenbacks, gt75's or just a cab of all 4 v30's for $529 + $68 shipping. My Rhythm guitarist and I both have it with 2 v30's and 2 gt75's and they sound great. The v30's are good for the lows and the gt75's get the awesome highs that we all tend to like.

build it on your own.
take the volume of the cabinet you like, take the wood and the speakers.
For recording, i would build a 2x12.
Maybe you can do this for under 300$ with V30s.
The saved money it would invest in different speakers, so that you can choose what you need in a particular situation.
I would make a piece of the backplate removeable, 1/3 in the middle, so you can switch closed back/ open ack settings.
2 speakers i would wire parrallel.

+1 for Avatar Cabs. I have three, and I'll be ordering another in a month or so. For the price of one Orange cab, you could get two Avatars with different speakers to expand your palette. Their Hellatone series of treated Celestions are great.

Get one with Hellatone 60s (V30s) and one with Hellatone 30s (G12H30s), and you're good to go, although he also offers Eminence Legends and a few other speakers. Those will suit a wide range of amps, and you can mark mic positions etc on em without fear of mucking up a $1k cab.

I use 2x12 with a semi-open back so I can mic the back and reverse the phase...sounds amazing. My two speakers are 1 v30 and 1 gt75. So far, they've covered every genre fine.

Many choices out there. The Uberkab's great for rock and metal. The Mesa recto's good for metal but better for rock. I also have a buddy using Vader cabs for metal and he's loving them.

I had the opposite results I had a couple of open back cabs and they were a no go for metal. To me the sound of metal is closed back cabs.
