On the good news side, the first units *should* be ready for shipment (probably ebay auctions) on the 3rd quarter of 2009.
On the bad news side, the first ones will be compatible with cubase/nuendo only.

Best regards and thanks to you all.

Ummmm, Paulo? "Dude", if I may.....

It might be a bit hard to rise to this occasion that life is presenting you here. Its not going to be easy to get your idea materialized into a product.
But do not give up! What you have here is genius, in my opinion, and is just the type of product that people working with a DAW could easy find use for. I cant be the first to tell you how big this could be.

Just to get your idea to where it is in that video is simply genius. You, sir, are one helluva smart guy! All respects!

EDIT: Hey just thought of this! It does indeed look Star Trek-ish. Which is actually awesome. How many guys who record at home or ITB are not nerdy enough to have never seen Star Trek: Next Generation? Not many. Hell, we probably all know who "Q" is. Here's my point. I bet Will Wheaton is out of work enough that I could find him on MySpace and hire him to come over and I could shout orders at him and watch him work the screen.

Yes....Id totally sit in a chair behind his ass and shout "4 more db to the overheads!!" ~ "Less gain on the snare!" ~ "Ramm-ing speeed!" ~ things like that. I'd pay for that!

YES! haha. Not even a huge Star Trek fan but I know that'd be awesome.

Any chance this could be made to work with LOGIC?

+1.

I'm fine with the Behringer BCF2000 and Presonus Faderport and a jog wheel for the basic stuff, but it's the plugins I spend most of the time with and setting them right is just not fun. Even the Mackie C4 sucks at it with Logic.

This however looks so natural and easy, the knobs do what their label says and you don't have to go back and forth between a display and the control. Just like real hardware.

A lot of money for the Studer / Revox / Soundcraft patent holders:

Studer - [Products]
Soundcraft - [Products]

There's nothing new under the sun.

When I first saw a Vistonics system, I was like "Why didn't I thought of that!". As with other great inventions it is so simple it produces that reaction.

They have patented it, and it can make it impossible for smaller companies to produce anything based on the idea. Or at least a lot more difficult.

But a DIY kit anyone could attach on top of their existing screens.. The only problem would be the software. I can't write it. Any takers?

I for one have been impressed by what I've seen in that video. It may not be anything "completeley new", but still innovative and allows you more hands on control over your software!

....And they don't even build DAW controllers. The guy would have to pay huge royalties to Soundcraft.

How long does such a patent last? Will we ever see this knob-over-screen thing somewhere else?

How long did it take before many manufacturers started making moving faders for example?

As for the DIY kit, we might have trouble fitting the kit on different screens, because the background might not align correctly because of the physical frame of the screen. Lots of trouble unless the software makes it possible to move arround the graphics to align them with the knobs.

I'm guessing there would also be an issue with Universal Audio? This guy obviously did something more than bitmaps to split the actual interface and fit it under his knobs. We can see the virtual knobs and meters moving.

Too bad, now that Soundcraft saw this, they might start producing it at high costs.

A DIY version would be easy to make work on different screens. It could just be the pots / cable housings / a drilling template for everyone to adjust for their specific needs. Then you would just measure and print out a drilling template for the plexiglass. As the pots would actually be just encoders without the motors, the whole "kit" would cost next to nothing.

Edit: The "brain" could be a fairly simple Midibox 64 or something similar.

But the software is the real issue.

To be done right this would require a midi software that could mimic mackie controller(s) for the sequencer and be fully configurable on the inside. The software should allow users to freely map any parameter to any pot and modify the graphics to suit the purpose of the pot too.

It would make sense to incorporate the possibility to hook up other midi controllers to the software too.

That way it could have motorized faders underneath the pot-equipped screen also, and if one wishes, one could add a few more screens too... The software would be like a modular midi control surface mainframe.

To be done really properly such software should operate on something like EuCon protocol. Something that allows it to communicate with the DAW using ethernet instead of midi.

I would have started this already myself if I could program such software. The screen / pots / graphics part is easy. But the software is what makes or breaks it.

WOW amazing id be interested in a Mac, cubase/ reaper version!

I think there needs to be a poll for which platform and software youd like your controller to work with so he can get an idea of how many PC/ cubase/ reaper/ pt etc... buyers there are and how many mac reaper/ cubase/ logic/ pt ect.. buyers there are

I showed this to some of my industry buds and they all thought this design might infringe on patents owned by Harman that they are using on Soundcraft and Studer consoles.

Apparently Harman has let it be known that they are going to aggressively enforce the patent.

Just something to be aware of.

Paulo how time flies....
Hope you make a DIY version to avoid the patent rights...
With the BCR 2000 do you send 14Bit Midi Messages?
Have 8 times contacted steinberg for the controller SDK.
In future they want to bring the Controller SDK to the public...

In the meantime I configure my BCR2000 for Channel EQ etc. with the Generic Remote.
I am controlling the frequency range fine with a 14Bit NRPN Message (16386 steps).

Yeah, they would do that don't they?

I do not believe them.

1) The patent is from 1999. The first lines of the patent says(more or less) the following: "A device that modifies or alters audio signals". The patent was made for AUDIO MIXING DESKS. My device is a midi controller.

2) The patent system IS NOT worldwide. They patented the thing at USA and extented the patent in Europe. They DID NOT extended the patent in any other area of the world - including south america where, incidently, Brazil is located. They had 3 years - until 2002 to do so. This means that, at leats according to Brazilian laws I cannot patent it here neither can them.

3) It pisses me off that a company owns a patent just to put it in a drawer and does not use it. So if they want to create a copy of my work - so be it - I may even help. I created the controller because there was nothing - and it seems that after 2 years - there's still nothing like it. If this was only a software project I would have gone open source a long time ago. I only will do it if someone out there will not. I don't need this to earn money. I still have my very small software company, my family and my music and I would thank you very much retain my honor :-)

4) Of course this could be challenged at court. Let them. Resistance is futile, but welcome.

I do not remember - that was 3 years ago :-)

I think it was nrpn because I choose a resolution of 512 steps.

More steps than that results in no better use for the plugin, but clogs the lan comunication, rendering the controller slugish. With 512 steps it is immediate.

A bit of News...

First of all, thank you all for keep sending me messages

To the point: I tried 3 times to build this controller. It is nearly impossible to get a reasonable selling price (i.e < US$ 500) without a established hardware company backing you.

In the last months I received a couple of emails from very nice people around the globe (Thanks Emre - from germany )

So I decided once more to try to build this thing.

I will keep you posted here and at the website of my musical group, storya.

STORYA

Best regards
