@jkrummi
Nice to see you staying in touch with this thread..
It seems you`re quite interested in all that controller stuff too. Or did you just have the right keywords for google ?

Hey, what you mean SDK is hard to get?
I simply registered at the steinberg site for a 3rd party developer account and downloaded it.. 2.4 and 3.2
or are you reffering to the special sdk he got from steinberg...
(thanx to steinberg for giving it to him thumbsup )

First post...

Whats going on over there in Brasil?... since I discovered this thread Im waiting for news and small hidden clues how you`ve done that...

Some other contributions here were also fascinating
thinking about what jkrummri added

simply using
a hid ubs interface
+encoders and buttons
+ a glass plate
+ a monitor
make an easy way to build the hardware for something like you`ve created

plug it in (usb) and you could play supermarioland with it

o.k. so
we had to add a hid to midi converter (software) to get midi data
there are so many out there like mjoy MJOY: Joystick to MIDI converter and so on
done!
that was the easy part....

So what I realy want....realy... realy...is to buy that piece of software

maybe you could enlighten me with a few anwsers?
Though I know you need all your time to get in touch with the company`s now

Question0: I dont understand (but how could I... I didn?t develop the dragon controller) why your controller runs on a second machine and does it all via tcp/ip. Why is that?

details, details, details :-)
Look at the thread in kvr "ultimate midi controller". I discussed some technical details there.
As someone already comment here, if there was not a single computer just for running the touch screen software, it would have a swlow response time. That way it is instantaneous. That leads to comunication: tcp is the best solution in that area.

Question1: You are using the original gui elements and simply rearrange them? You have to modify/recompile any .dll ? Or does your editor "simply" *ahem not so simple extract the gui elements from the dll...

Question2: So I assume what we see on the controller pc monitor is only a representation of the actual unmodified plugin on the host pc? Somehow grabbing orig. gui elements from the plugins .dll and reading/writing values from the host?
So the orrig. dll remains unharmed ?
Or are we seeing the actual modified plugin from the host pc?
Or are the plugins running on the controller *probablynot
Tsk, tsk tsk: Occam´s razor, my friend.
Nothing on that... My window is simply made transparent depending on specific areas what you´re seeing is the real gui plugin. That solves also the problem of gui plugin copyright.

Quote:
Question3: Midi is generated on the host or the controller pc?
There are EXTENSIVE midi messages running in ALL directions. Also made heavy use of wm_userdata. LOOK AT THE KVR FORUM.

Dammed I have so many questions... This thing totally rocks...
when your rich and this things price jumps over the 1000€ line,
so i will have to save money for about a year (still studying)
send me the sourcecode

I bet there is a way you could make it all run on the host pc...
but that might give the need for additional vga/hdmi outputs since most studio computers allready run 2 monitors.. you were using a usb to vg adapter? didn`t you write that? on wich pc? controller or host? for the touchscreen i assume?

anyway... rock on...
ps: gimmmmeeeeee thaaaaaaaaaaaad sourcecode

1) I do not like to say never, but if I things are going the way I expect them to go, we´ll see this for US$350-US$500, without the lcd screen, of course. So over US1300? Not a chance, pal.

2) Sorry, but the software REALLY is the most difficult part of the work.

3) I used a $US30 usb 2 vga because I have 1 graphical card only. people with matrox or similar cards could use other vga outputs.

4) Curiosity is a bless. keep doing that and if I were you, I´ll try to make one or two things yourself. You ask the right questions.

Paulo

P.S. I am on vacation right now. I am sorry not to have time to answer all the questions.

But he is using the SDK from Steinberg, Not easy to get.

There are a lot of ways to do some of the things he is doing BUT it looks that
he has the same feedback from Cubase That Euphonix and
now SmartAv are getting. And I think they have more then one person doing the Coding, Debugging, Design, Hardware, ETC.

That is why so many company's use the HUI Protocol.

Paulo
As a fellow Gear Slut I would be glad to help. No strings attached
Well, I did all the software myself. I´ve been an c++ programmer for 20 years, I´ll probably start doing code before you where born, unless you´re old like me :-)

Didn´t ask for and did not receive a single feedback from Steinberg. (I am not complainig! Sending me the SDK was good enough). A lot of guessing here.

Paulo

P.S. I am 45 :-)

That is the plugin sdk, for writing audio and midi plugins.
The sdk I used is another sdk. And it is not the sdk that novatino and other use, which is yet another sdk. I am not sure, but since this is not public downloadable, I think you´ll have to ask Steinberg yourself.

paolo thanx...!!! for the great work and your patience with us all going wild with questions...
thumbsup
enjoy your vacation!!!

So when your home and need time off from your beautyful studio..
Come back to GS and play Q&A with us

Since you just said you made the gui for each plug yourself ...(corel)
and that they are bitmaps...
But that we are also seeing the original gui...(with some parts of your window transparent)
and while i dont think you completly rebuild the gui (moving parts, representation of eq curves, etc)

Do we see the original gui, shining trough partly, overlayed with custum bitmap?

Sorry couldn`t help asking more!!

You`re right im sooooo curious about all that... I`ll definitly mess around with it a see if I can do a little DiY myself
(I might even say: if I could do it myself.. what might lead to a little wordplaying and an angry girlfriend . Im not an native speaker..is Diy also a little naughty in english?)

it would be soooo cool if it would be affordable...
but think about all your time and efforts and make, realy sure youre earning something!!! Promised?

sorry no offense meant when i said it would be over 1000€
but I was just thinking that when your dealing with big company`s, how "interesting" the difference between actual worth and street price often gets. Product, marketing, seller, reseller, resellerreseller, custumer...

Im glad and happy to pay what ever you think is a reasonable...
count me in!!

(i`ll be messing around with that stuff anyway..and see if I can control myself *hahahaha )

The knobby plug-in controller for $500 is a no-brainer. I'd buy it. REVOLUTIONARY.

Hire a patent lawyer, get a patent for this before someone rips you off. Then you could even license your patent rights to a company with the manufacturing capabilities you might not have....I'd think Novation would be interested, this makes their SL controllers look like Tonka toys.

It IS being good.

I'll be back on next weekend.

I think Europe (or Italy, perhaps) is definitely expensive when someone tries to buy audio stuff.

Thumbs up I never work with DAWs or plug ins

BECAUSE THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT ON THE MARKET!!!

seriously....this could finally bring me around....touch screen panning in 3 dimensional space is something I've been waiting on for years (actually my original vision was virtual reality mixing in 3d space but this is probably more conducive to workflow), and the plug in controller is just genius... if these products make it to market you can bet on converting a few of us analog dinosaurs.....damn you anyway

Paulo,

You're plugin controller is more innovative than anything I've seen from Mussikmesse this year. When might this be available to the public?

We can't let this thread fall into the abyss. Paulo, have you recieved any contact from others on this board that might be able to help you out in terms of getting this thing off the ground. I could totally see someone getting a little nervous and overwhelmed at the notion of trying to make their home-brew DIY solution into a full-fledged product available to the masses.

Yep! How come it seems, as users, it's obvious to us what we are missing from our workflows? But the manufacturers just aren't getting it?

Touchscreens with tactile controls will be the way of the future and it is folks like Paulo that will blaze the trail.

Ask their product managers why that is.

I'm in agreement that this would be pretty amazing, but part of getting something like this built in a large product development org is making everyone up and down the foodchain believe your statement. That's no small task.

Disclaimer: I don't work in the audio industry. I am a product manager, though.

I'm back :-)

First let me apologize for the long delay in answering.

Since my last post, I already started producing it.
I AM desperately trying to keep the price tag under $500 and I'll think we'll make it.
On the good news side, the first units *should* be ready for shipment (probably ebay auctions) on the 3rd quarter of 2009.
On the bad news side, the first ones will be compatible with cubase/nuendo only.

Best regards and thanks to you all.

I watched this an IMMEDIATELY WANTED THE PLUGIN CONTROLLER! It is what the market needs...

Paulo - another vote if you can get it to work with Ableton...$500 is on the high side but if it works well I would go for it. Alternatively I would be happy to source and send a BCR2000.

Would love to see this work with Sonar. I have a BCR 2000 that I'd be happy to donate because Sonar's ACT is completely useless.

500 seems to be a great price for everything that it does. I mean the touchscreens and knobs is dope! im gonna set money aside for the release of this unit.

This is spectacular. Usually I'm pretty cynical but regarding this controller I'd say.. get a patent fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE.

I will buy one when it's available. Don't care if the price will be under or over 500 euros. If I can control my UAD plugins in Cubase like this I'm sold.

With all the shitty controllers on the market, why is no one offering you a deal? Hard to understand..
