who makes internal acoustic soundhole mics?

I have a 1952 Martin 00-17 that I use for live acoustic performing. It has a GHS soundhole mic in it now that sounds like shit and has feedback problems.

I need to figure out how to amplify this instrument live without modifying it too much.

Money is not a limiting factor and I do not want to modify the instrument any more than the 1/4" endpin hole that it already has. I'd like to be able to utilize an endpin jack to plug the instrument in.

John Frusciante uses an old Martin 00-15 (very similar to my guitar) and he has some sort of internally mounted system that sounds awesome and I'd like to copy it. I emailed his guitar tech, Dave Lee, but haven't received a reply as to what setup they use.

Any help here would be awesome.

I realize that I may also need to get a preamp pedal to control gain, volume, and EQ.

K&K makes pickups that go inside the guitar, the "pure western". Easy to install, took me about an hour including the time it took to read the directions 10 times. You have to enlarge the hole where the strap button goes on the bottom of the guitar to put the plug jack into. Nothing tricky, I promise.

I use it for playing live... it's pretty good, but there's no pickup that'll make the guitar sound like it's in a nice room with a good mic.

The sound is good, better than the soundhole style pickups I've used which are prone to feedback.

The other option would be the style that goes under the bridge, literally underneath the little plastic or bone piece. Fishman makes a lot of those. I've heard some of them that sound pretty good.

Just get a piezzo or use a naiant X-S with the acoustic guitar clip-on. That works for me, I don't know about a live set up though.

Yeah, the Naiant lapel mic the X-S can be purchased with an instrument mount and the mic sounds great on acoustic guitar.

Clip on mics and soundhole mics are big feedback trouble if you're playing live with a band.

Audio-Technica AT831b lapel mic. Awesome on most stringed instruments and it comes with a WIDE variety of mounting hardware.

Have you considered an external mic? If I had a guitar like that, I would plug the block with a dowel, install a standard end button, and use one of these:

DPA 4099 (It clamps to the guitar body)

That being said, the combination of an LR Baggs M1 and Schertler Dyn G (both able to be mounted temporary or through the end-pin can sound amazing. Listen here:

I've tried about 20 mics inside guitars and my current favorite is the K&K mic.
Next is the Joe Mills mic, but I don't know if that's still available. It's brighter than the K&K. I think the cheap Crown's etc that many use are just awful. I'd say the less sound the guitar itself makes the better luck you'll have with an internal mic. If the guitar has a big lively sound it'll feedback easily. In that case an externally mounted mic may just sound better-though it will never get you really loud. If I need to be loud I play electric...
