Nevermind recording notes

Nice link to Some old recording tidbits from Butch Vig..surely they've been posted before, but what hell .it's still interesting stuff.
I stumbled into it doing a search for Sound city studios:
http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomfr...-june-1991.php

If you navigate to the main page,it has a complete directory/guide on all of Nirvana's sessions..even early foo's stuff.
Very cool..

Also on the Breed notes .all that is good about overdriving a neve 10xx pre on direct guitars and bass. stike
It's also funny how A wallace says he didn't use samples and Vig said he did..
I've always believed the latter anyways

I agree with you, I'd probably believe Vig too.

But, why would AW say he didn't use samples if he did?

It seems like we're at a point where admitting to using samples undermines our ability.

Does this eminate from not wanting to be perceived as a cheat?

Or, is it an ego trip, 'look how good 'I' can make this sound from what 'YOU' gave me to mix' kinda thing...?

I Think its that and a bisness thing, it's like when he say's " I dont need any gear, the only gear I need is my ears" yeah right ....

I'dd love to see him mix on a behringer with no outboard, no samples...

Both.
In my experience ,many times I'll use samples to make up for another engineer's laziness/inability to capture the original sound well..sometimes people just don't have a clue or give a shit about tuning a kit..especially a snare/kick..just taking a little extra time to get the source right.
sometimes there's no time[yeah, thats what they all say!]
sometimes it's a bad choice in choosing a snare drum/ and or tuning for a particular song..
other times the drummer is just plain inconsistent with hitting the things.
I make a point to always get single hits of all kit peices after a particular songs last take ...so if any hits are off, I can replace them with the same sounds.
I mostly try to blend and beef up whats already there without replacing a sound completety[which for rock especially, sounds like unorganic shit to me]
when I'm engineering ,I usually bring a shitload of drums..
but sometimes the 15 dollar pawnshop snare beats out the 1500. buck solid shell or bell brass custom ones.. tuning and selection are key..
I'm sure Vig/ Ross Garfield[drum doc] had the stuff sounding good on the day.
the label[Geffen?] wanted it sounding slicker, more commercial.
I'd really love to here Vig's original mixes.. ..the "raw"version of Nevermind.

I've been nagging at Butch Vig (via gearslutz.com regular Billy Bush) to guest moderate..

Lets shout -

WE WANT BUTCH!

(perhaps he will listen!)

Come on Butch - hang with us for a month! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!

I've heard most of the "Nevermind" story before, but still, that was kind of painful to read.

The story of a band having their sound ripped out from under them and made into something they couldn't stand to hear!

Yuck...

a couple of butch vig's mixes are included on "with lights out" including the one for "smells like teen spirit." to give you another perspective....

Maybe AW claimed no samples so as not to suggest that the original sounds were not up to par... you know, peer respect.

Bottom line..They don't get along..At all.
The guy from Alanis' band[Chris Chaney] has been the JA bassist for a while now..
kind of an interesting swap innit?

I agree. Eric A's bass lines were/are awesome. Simple but awesome like in Summertime Rolls thumbsup . Maybe he thought that JA is kind of lame now and did not want to do it anymore. I thought thier last album was a p.o.s. That single was so crappy it drove me nuts. He and the drummer were the best part of the old albums.

I think Eric thought JA was lame a long time ago...
He had a major falling out with them ..which started way back in the original heyday.

They are definitely NOT what they once were. I still listen to Nothing's Shocking and Ritual regularly. Awesome albums IMO.

ditto. eric avery was the real heart of janes addiction. there is a reason all their best songs start w/ a bass line and some of the best parts in the middle of songs are totally based on the bass line (three days solo section).

the last record was so horrible. i just couldn't stand it. the record w/ avery and navarro was better. i forget the name but it had a little of that janes vibe.

the bassist from porno was the bassist last time i saw them. i have seen them with flea and mike [whats his name? husker du] and seen them with eric avery a couple times. the last show i saw was freaking amazing i must say with the porno for pyros guy. stephen perkins was sadistic that night.... the whole show was great and definately swamped pretty much all else out right now.... or course they played mostly old stuff.

hell, i went to that first palooza running a 104 deg temperature in 100 degree weather so i wouldnt miss JA.

i realyl wish ritual would be remixed, its just horribly mixed/mastered and rips your ears out on the high end. i might just have to remaster my copy of it.

I thought the deal was that Eric's NA sponsor didn't approve of Eric re-joining JA. I remember Eric being pretty open about it.
