question engineers? do i need a separate hardware mixer? with digi oo3 rack+?

hey can you guys help me out a bit and tell me if im gona need a separate hardware mixer with the 003 rack+ to hear everything im playin through my hardware synths> external pre>compress> line in 003> computer and outs of 003into the monitors.

can i go directly into the monitors from 003rack and? be able to hear everything that i have pluged into the "ins" while im playing it live or when im not recordeing, just playing? or does the sound outsource needs to come from a mixer into the monitors?

i dont plan on gettin a mixer if i dont need it. remember im not gona do any mixing. it would just trackin vocals and sounds. reason i wanted a 003 rack+ cause not only its compatible with protools but it has 8 line ins. so i can connect 6outs of my hardware synths into the pres and into 6line ins of 003.

id appreciage the answers!

Yes you can do that, assuming your monitors are powered. You have to have the tracks in Pro Tools record-enabled to hear them, though. But, of course, you don't have to hit record. Helps to be in "low-latency" mode.

The rack+ has 8 mic/DI preamps... not 8 line-level inputs.

.... edit ....
So yes, you have to have a computer around, too. I don't think the rack versions will work as a live mixer like the 002 console.

If you plug directly to the inputs on the 003, there will be a small bit of latency in the monitoring through the monitor outs, which are channels 1,2. It might get messy with overdubs and layering, as everything comes out the same place - the previously recorded stuff and the new material. You'll have to set playback levels in PT's mixer lower than the incoming stuff so they can hear themselves over the playback. We use an external Mackie mixer to monitor preamps and playback separately (and in mixing).
