blink 182 vocal

Curious if anyone knows how the vocal effect is achieved on a lot o blink 182 songs. it sounds similar to doubling, but super clean. maybe an exciter/enhancer or a pitch trick? if anyone knows anything else about the production behind "Enema of the State" I'de love to hear bout it.

I don't have the ins and outs but it sounds very much like a simple vocal double with perhaps Vocalign used.
I don't think it's anything particularly innovative. Could be wrong.

ive been wondering that too. there seems to be no flams on any of the consonants. i dont think its an "effect", but rather just a very consistent performance that was doubled until it was perfect.

i know of a good trick that a lot of 90's pop records have for backup vox and harmonies, though. you have the talent pronounce only the vowels of the words (assuming the double is the same line being sung as the lead). this helps out a lot with the timing issues of the consonants, so you dont get those awkward flams. for a good example of this, listen to the backup vox on any michelle branch record, most notably in the song "everywhere". there is some cool wha-wha sounding vox behind her lead track.

i dont know if thats what they did, but i thought i heard it on enema of the state a couple times, at least in the harmony parts.

Not exactly what you are asking for, but I am pretty sure they record their vocals through a Blue Bottle mic for a lot of the stuff tin the past. I've seen it in a lot of the videos.

i assisted on a couple blink sessions in san diego and they did double a lot of vocals. they recorded the vocals to pro tools and everything else to tape. drums were on 2inch 16 track and sounded really great... huge. they tracked those somewhere in LA.. maybe cello?

anyway- yeah.. i think it's probably just doubled but who knows what happened in the mix?

Can it really just be doubling? I don't have any experience with vocalign, but it seems like the consensus on GS is that it shouldn't be used for doubling a lead singer–better for harmonies with other singers. Someone throw me a bone here what exactly does vocalign do anyway?

It really is just doubling, plus a couple of other things. One of them is tuning the vocals. When you tune both tracks you get that pleasing phasey flangey effect. If you are straight-lining both of them with the retune speed at 0 then it will be less apparent, but a more natural tuning will yield a better result. The second thing is vocalign, which I've never used before, but I'm guessing it's something like elastic audio specifically designed for vocals, probably allowing you to line up consonants to prevent flamming.

they tend to use a mixture of condensor and ribbon microphones and probably double or tripple the vocals (centre and then pan left and right) in the production stage the center vocal is pushed more than the extra vocals. extra vocals are probably compressed really hard with the attack matching the tempo of the song. Reverb is probably really fast and gated but kept low in the mix.

could be wrong though but thats what i can hear in there newer songs.

A touch off subject, but does anyone else notice that a vocal is unintentionally (most likely) cut off on the song "The Rock Show?" It's near the end of the tune when Mark sings: "With the girl at the Rock Show."

Go here:

It's about the 2:40 on the video, and it's on the album too.

holy shit, for serious, I thought I was the only one who noticed that in The Rock Show. I posted it a while ago in the "mistakes on major albums" thread.

Also, side note, Enema was fully tracked to tape, no vocalign there, m'friends...

Not cut off, just lowers in volume. Think it's Mark, not an editing mistake.
