tape is alive... tapedeck just died... hello goodbye tape

dear gearslutz,

I own a Studer A80 1/4" (no dinosaurus jokes please tutt), beside beeing my master medium, I am using it as an effect: for hot drumsubs, fuller sounding guitars, vox (for instance: split signal, one track normal, one hot, than mix to taste) and yada, yada, yada...

I noticed the big crying when it seemed the last tape company is dying... I followed the threads "maybe that portico fatso beats?...and which tape simulation is better of each?"

maybe I'm a bit naive, so why not buying the real? I paid 750 bucks for mine, that's really cheap

so, is anybody out there using still tape or did you already said goodbye ol tapes?
is it just another sad historic chapter of the audio industry?

Nothing else sounds quite like tape, tape is still available, tape machines cheaper than ever, parts still more or less available-
Seems like a no-brainer to me- If you want the tape sound, why not use tape??!?

I do...

In September, the "tape is dead" talk will finally be over:

Love my Tascam MSR-16 and can't wait for my refurbed MCI JH-110 to arrive (counting the days).

I use tape multitrack and mix down. If a client wants digital I can do that too.

Quantegy was refilling the "pipeline" for a couple of months now and some distributors actually have shelf stock now. For instance:

The Emtec recipes and some of the manufacturing equipment have landed with a company in the Netherlands (name of new company slips my mind), and they are supposed to be coming online again soon as well.

Maybe we'll put a tape machine on the next lab requisition.

Mix to 1/2" here. It's a total no-brainer for me but I did get nervous for a few weeks when Quantegy went down.
