Nashville Recording Workshop and Expo

this is gonna be really cool, and i haven't seen it mentioned here yet:

Nashville Recording Workshop & Expo

plus, it's at the musicians hall of fame, which rocks. it's not expensive at all; and the panels are hosted by a who's who of engineers/producers. seriously- take a look at the list of panelists.

there are also a lot of exhibitors too, so poke around on the site.

just thought i'd hip everyone to it- i'm going to be there, and am hosting an event at my studio that corresponds with it:

www.chrismara.com/goof/AnalogTasteTest.pdf

and it's thread: Analog Taste Test- Nashville, TN Feb 20th

Yeah, well I was gonna go but just now I went out to my studio and "Hmmmm, what's that smell......it seems to be only in the studio and it smells like .....a......................................................SKUNK!!! (The 4 legged kind) AARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh the joys of a converted tobacco barn. I'll be learning about skunk removal from under floor space instead of mic pre's and all of the great workshops that WERE in store for me.
There, that feels better. Sorry, I just had to vent. My wife doesn't need to hear my griping.
Wish me luck,
Bill

Chris,

We came by the booth but you were one BUSY dude! Hope it was a good time at 1979 tonight. The workshop has been a lot of fun. One hour recording with George Massenburg was about 100 hours too short. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Just got back. WOW. Now that is my kind of weekend! Tony Shepperd is a TRIP, just funny as hell. Had to say that first. My wife wants to know if George Massenburg will adopt us. He's the best; literally one of those times where you HAD to be there. Just the time with those two guys alone was more than worth the price of admission... and there were so many more fine, fine moments. Lynn Fuston! Excellent presentation, nowhere near enough time for all the info he wanted to share. Tim Akers, thank you so much for showing the Logic session. Carl Tatz gave me some advice on fixing some of the bad acoustics in my odd-shaped room - THANK YOU. Rich Adler showed us how he gets great recordings of acoustic guitar and mandolin. And on and on and on. BTW, Wes Dooley from AEA wears one sweet-looking top hat

The workshop and expo were held at the Musicians Hall Of Fame, so when we weren't attending classes or drooling over all the gear upstairs (my wallet is empty now but we have some sweet gear being shipped to us) we were wandering the halls taking pics of the exhibits. I'll post some of those later.

Can we do this every weekend?

Doug:
I don't remember if we had the pleasure of meeting this weekend or not. I think we did as I do remember talking to someone from Huntsville. I met so many people over the past 2 days. Thank you for your comments. It was a lot of hard work by a talented and dedicated group of people that I have the honor of knowing and working with. I'm pleased to know that you and others that I have talked with enjoyed the program. I will be adding some pictures to the Nashville Recording Workshop website over the next few days so check back every now and then. We're all taking a few days off to decompress.

I'd also like to thank you and the others at Gearslutz for helping to promote this event. We had lots of traffic coming from the Gearslutz forum and that really helped to get people to the workshop.

Please feel free to make suggestions for future panels/workshops as we move forward towards planning for 2010. I'm interested in hearing where we could make improvements. We've already started making our own list of how it can be improved. This was the first shot ever by AES Nashville undertaking an event of this scope and now that it's all over, it exceeded our humble expectations.

Would love to use some of your comments posted above on the NRW+E website as part of a review/wrap up. Please let me know if this would be permitted. If you would like to submit a more formal review, we would welcome that as well.

Mike,

By all means feel free to use any of my comments. My wife and I will put together a more detailed review and I'll send that out to you within the next few days at the latest. Thank you for a wonderful weekend! I'll get back to you soon.

Rich is great too- and SUCH a nice guy. he stopped by '79 and chatted for a while about the conference.

the "taste test" we hosted at Welcome To 1979 went until about 3am; and during the nite i saw mike spitz, john french, randy blevins, rich adler and steve (from sonic craft) all talking and pointing at tape machines. god knows how many years of experience were in the room that nite!!! LOL

not sure what you mean about posting clips- but you can PM me and we can talk about getting some of your tracks 'taped' via my service 'analog anywhere'.

Chris,

I hope you got to sleep all day Sunday! Sounds like you were busy (which is a good thing).

My wife made a slideshow of pics from the NRW+E. Click on the link in my sig for some of the highlights. I have a few typos to fix but I think folks should be able to get the general 'vibe' of the event.

Does anyone have a recording, notes, or transcript of the "Small Room - Big Sound" workshop? I am really interested in what they had to say.

Thanks,

Rappy

I have around 12 hrs of audio to sort thru but should be able to get an audio file or CD for you by end-of-week.

One of the best things (for me anyway) in that session was Carl Tatz explaining how to set your monitors for the sweet spot. The tweeters in your monitors should be 67.5" from each other, and the same distance from your mixing chair. You need to be *inside* that triangle to hear the sweet spot; outside it you will be hearing the speakers. My room will only allow me to do 64" but it made a hell of a difference from where they were before.

Thanks Doug! I can mail you a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope with a couple of blank DVDs in it if that makes it easier for you. I also have 10 or 20 hours of audio lectures from a VERY famous engineer that I'd be willing to send you as a trade. Send me an email for more info: danrappaport@hotmail.com

Thanks!

While you're in town might be a good idea to check out Michael Wagner's place if he's still doing seminars, as well as cool studios such as Blackbird, etc.

Michael Wagener was on one of the panels. Funny stories, great pics from WireWorld, ie recording King's X drums outside in his yard because the studio "wasn't right."
