Thread Starter | Actually Did a PAYING SESSION in My New Studio! I am Already Assigned to Play BAD COP
We started ODs on the C&W band project I started last month. We have moved to my garage studio where we will do all ODs and probably mix. We are doing it all in DP5 (I have not up-graded to DP6 yet.) IT IS PRETTY COOL TO BE FINALLY RECORDING SOMETHING IN MY GARAGE BECAUSE I HAVE MAINLY SPENT HOURS UPON HOURS RE-BUILDING THE MCI JH-528C. I recorded the band on a large stage where they play three to four nights per week. I mainly concentrated on getting drum takes and used the better mic pres for them. I used four APIs, my Sphere pair and toms on a Midas 240. The drums are A-OK. We did bass ODs and a few ACSTC tracks yesterday. All is sounding fine, but I am only monitoring thru the MCI for now. The lead vocalist and featured guy in the band wasn't there, so they asked me if I could be "bad cop" when we record him. He is a decent vocalist, but they think he has too much forced twang in his voice. The band said he is a big Garth Brooks fan.... hmmmm..... OK, Garth sold a few million records... he could pick worse. They have asked me to cajole him into keeping the twang in check. I can do it. I am quite the diplomat in the studio. On the other hand every time I look at a player they ask if they messed up! I guess I am already the producer. It always works out this way, too! It's OK... I can handle the job. It's just good to be recording out there! |

Just be careful about being bad cop. You don't want to do other people's dirty work for nothing -- they will never own up to saying anything if something goes sour... ![]() Just try to keep in the middle of things and everything will be cool.

what they "assign" you to do is a bad way to get started . If indeed they are looking for you to produce ..the only sides you should take are the ones that the producer feels will make the music stronger . I `m sure the rest of the band could be produced into sounding better too if you`re really up to the job. Will they feel betrayed if a suggestion comes their way ? Sooner or later it`ll bite you on the nose though and priority probably should be getting the best sounds possible .....better to concentrate on that unless a real clear verbal decision by the band puts you in the producers chair |

Better to play the bad cop than the banjo.
