Best Pop Filter

Any suggestions on the best pop filter. From what I've read the metal ones appear to do the best job and are easist to maintain. Also any comments on how well the filters clamps/arms stack up would also be helpful. These will mostly be used on Neumann tube mics.

Pauly here, the only one i know who don't affect the sound. and build quality is stellar.
can get them from thomann in europe.

Put the mike more far away this saves you and mostly sounds better if you search for the right sweet spot of the voice...

I'm more concerned about protecting the mic capsule. I've got a Wagner U47w coming. I've used some pretty cheap filters up untill now so I want to make sure I've got something that does a good job and protects the mic.

...absolutely love this one...cheaper than Stedman (same screen material)...wide, slightly curved shape gives great coverage for vocalists who shift around while tracking...also excellent when tracking with 2 mics for the same vocal (ribbon or dynamic with condenser)...highly recommended!

Man, thanks for that link. That page have a lot of neat things including generic shockmounts even reflection filters for cheap. Bookmarked!

Pauly, no question. Stedman doesn't even compare from my experience with both, and many others. You should research the reports of 'whooshing' noises that are easily heard from metal screen diffusers. Not a good sound.

We have the metal Stedman and hose types. I'll use them both, but sometimes none is best.

Make a popping sound with your mouth and move your hand around to find exactly where no blast of air can be felt.

THAT'S the place to put the mike and forget about pop screens!

That is THE argument for a pop screen.

I like the old "AKG PF 20" but they don't make them anymore...

I'm new to the forum but I have a sterling audio pop filter. Its metal like you said and I love it. The steadmans are great too.

"boutique tax", i can assure you that is NOT the case!
anyone who has one of these in their hands can tell you the build, and materials are beyond average, this not, a plastic ring with some panty hose stretched across it.

every filter i've ever used, including the stedman, attenuates the highs and removes some of the intimacy of the vocal. a/b with and without, the filters always lose. i'd love to find one for which this isn't the case.

the Blast Pad is not just a pop filter, it is way more them that, i am very proud of it's performance on vocals, but it is a much more versatile tool then just that.

the Blast Pad will allow you to torture you mics in unheard of ways.
just the loss of time and cost of a re-ribbon or mic repair, would most certainly pay for the filter.
i have some awesome individual using mics in unheard of ways: )~

grab a Blast Pad, feel free to abuse and to torture you mics in unheard of ways.

When you get it in your hands on it for the first time, you'll physically see why it's different.
But after you hear it, you'll be convinced that it's better.
The top end is still great, it just takes out the plosives.

But I talked to Pete and he said contact him and he could send one out to you.

but that that aside, your all are trying to compare a versatile tool ( The Blast Pad ), to a pop filter ( what ever make ), and The Blast Pad ( in addition to being a very very nice pop filter ), is much much more.

I have a friend who came over and I cut vocals with the blast pad.
The next day the artist and producer came back and the producer brought his Stedman, mainly because he thought what you thought... it couldn't be that good.

The Stedman was up less than a minute.

Listen, I really don't want to go on and on about the Blast pad, because it starts to feel like hype.
But the truth of the matter is, it really works well. Unbelievably well. And you wont fully understand that until you try it. In this case, you really do get what you pay for.

If you don't believe me, ask e-cue. I know he tried it on his artist and was blown away.

I have had nothing but negative experiences with the metal pop filters - I've tried the Stedman and one other (I forget which one) and thought that sonically it was ok, but it never stops the low freq pops unless I'm RIGHT up on the filter and then I start to hear a "pfffttt" type of sound which is quite unnatural. I'm back to a double layer nylon one and it's not so bad....

Am I doing something wrong with the metal ones? About 6 inches or so off the mic (depending on the song/singer/etc) and right up on the filter?

It's only vintage if it works. Other wise it's just old crap. JS Bach or Beethoven never used auto-tune or comp tracks, nor an eq, a compressor/limiter, a reverb or a delay an analog or digital mix system. All that was achieved in the writing and performance of the music. Obviously Bach and Beethoven were doing it wrong.
