Cable run lengths FW vs Toslink

Which cable do you guys think would be better to have a longer run of, light pipe or firewire? Neither will be over 12ft.

At that length it doesn't matter, not for guaranteed data transmission anyway, but the optical cable will be more vulnerable to damage.

With digital, you just need to stay in spec. Optical can do impressively long runs in single mode without a repeater (think miles). Firewire is supposed to max out at 5 meters. 12 feet is within both specifications.

I realize both protocols are within spec to work at that length. I guess I was asking which you would choose for a "one or the other" scenario?

They are not directly comparable though in that sense. What you would choose depends on what interfacing you have.

Agreed, also depends if you'll be moving the equipment or staying stationary.

Stationary... Optical all the way. FW for portable equipment.
