Imho..I find the opto side adds some roundness/warmth..
whereas the VCA side does a bigger, wider, more euphonic version of the SSL "punch"thing..{I have C2 and 384]

I've really been digging the way the comp is laid out. Since, when in stereo mode, the left side controls everything, I pretty much leave the right side set up for tracking vox and guitars and such, when in mono mode. So, the stereo side becomes my mastering, mix buss, or drum buss go to.

I know it's been months since the last post here but now I'm starting to get a bad case of shadow hills compressor lust.

I make electronic music with vintage synths, some live intstruments, vocals and a lot of old effects (castle phasers, loft flangers etc). My only pres are the TG-2s. Recording into logic with mytek and out through dac-1.

I was thinking of getting a 33609JD and a purple MC77. JD for mix buss and some tracking, and the MC77 for tracking as well.

Now I'm thinking the SH is about the same price as the jd and mc77. Maybe I'll go that route.
Anybody have experience with all 3 and can "drop some knowledge" on me?

It looks SO SICK!! I mean really. This thing is from space.

I own all three.
all have a cool vibe all their own and are amazingly great tools.
The SH seems to always win on the mixbuss tryouts and great for tracking.
77's and JD switch around from drums, bass, vocals, etc.
no hard fast rules.whatever sounds good on the day.

Roundbadge,

Thanks for the info! Peter seems like such an a amazing talent. I might just have to add one of his works of art to my collection!

Now to find an EQ that will be as versitile for 2buss and tracking to go with it!

So after 11 pages of hype, how is this thing? I still see a 14-16 week wait. I am really close to pulling the trigger on it, but I would like to hear a bit more from the owners....

Do you still have to pay in full to order? I am a bit nervous about that much $$$ tied up for months on something that may take a year to deliver.

Not sure how the payment schedule works these days. If you get one, be prepared to give it up to your 2 buss forever. It absolutely rules.

Yeah, that would be cool. I'm not usually one to request demo clips, but I'm amazed I still haven't heard this thing! Someone just slam the bejezus out of something and flip through all the metals, por favor! Just make it one clip... mess with the knobs... mix in a little VO of you telling us what you're doing.... use a british accent, saying "IRON"..... "STEEL".... it will be like the end of side 1 of "Tubular Bells"!

Personally, I find downloading and A/B'ing seperate clips annoyingly useless for this sort of thing. Let's hear ya have some fun!

It's a beautiful thing~!

Still need some time to play, as I'm just getting the hang of it...now.

At this point I find the three different transformer settings very subtle, but I need much more time with it really put it through its paces and see what's what.
Should have more info soon.

The SHMC is a real pleasure to use! Had my first session with it yesterday. Very happy with initial results. Very much looking forward to getting inside it.

Does anyone happen to know Peter's new phone number. Calling the number on the Shadow Hills web site gets you a message that the phone is disconnected or not in service.

Thanks,

I think he's planning to, or has already moved to Austin, from what I was told at Vintage King. Strange that there wouldn't atleast be a forwarding number.......
