Shotgun Microphone Options

I realize this is predominantly a forum for those doing studio recording, but I am pretty sure most of you know your microphones pretty well. I have A Panasonic AG-DVX100b, and I need a good shotgun microphone for it. If you don't know what a AG-DVX100b is, it is a prosumer camcorder that has phantom powered XLR inputs. I am looking to spend between $200-$300 on this mic.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Most cheap shotguns sound plasticy to me. My best mic is a Schoeps MK41 and the whole reason why I got it was for movie sound (works as a great short shotgun) but that would run you way over budget. I'd think for that price you'd do better hiding some condensers around the shot and using a mixer to get them all perfect, sending that feed to the camera. Or Lavs.

Unhappy

If that's all you have left for the mic. you wasted the money on the camera.

The sound is actually more important than the picture - also - a good mic. will last you through at least five cameras as you will change the camera every three years or so and the mic. every 20 years or so (if that).

The ones to look at, really, are the MKH 416 (industry standard) or MKH 60, Schoeps CMIT is also getting liked.

Cheaper price K6/ME66

All these are a lot more than your budget - if your budget was really that tight it would have been better putting less into the camera and more into the mic.

I would not go cheaper if you want to make good recordings.

In Hollyweird the standard is the Neumann KM81/82 shotguns. Expensive. Also great is the AKG460/480 with a short shotgun capsule.
