developing a mix style

So i've been audio engineering for a few years now as my full time job. I do freelance work with independent rock bands. I've got to the point where I feel like I should be focusing my sound into a particular style. It seems like the really successful people in this business have a mix style that is very distinct and of their own. Then there are guys like me who try their best to mimic what the big guys do.

Do you feel that I should be more versatile when it comes to mix styles or should I focus your effort into one sound to call my own? To me, this seems to be what separates the pros from everyone else.

Just looking for a friendly discussion.
