Portico 5012 - does this stereo mic pre accept line level inputs?

I am wondering if the Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5012 duo mic preamp can accept line level signals at it's XLR inputs if setting the mic preamps to their bottom most value or is plugging line level into mic inputs considered a recipie for permanent damage?

Love to hear from Rupert Neve Designs or any Portico 5012 users who may be using the Portico 5012 as an in-line device say on their mixbus or on individual tracks for the HP filter and some coloration.

Thanks

The XLR inputs on the 5012 do accept line level input, I have done this with no problems and it is stated in the manual that this is an appropriate usage.

Silk mode on a mix could be nice.

Yes. Using the 5012 for makeup gain from a Folcrom. Making up ~30db or so I think.

Yup - it's made for it. It has an input impedance of around 10K.

Yes indeed - I am using it exactly like that - I think it is as important as the 5043
on the two bus in my digital world.

For what its worth, I sold my 5012 and purchased two 5032 models, which have
the three band EQ paired with the 5012 pre. The 5032 has separate mic and line in
ports on the back, which makes it a little easier to leave the units parked on the two
bus - if you run without a patch bay, that is a nice time saver.

When running the output of your mic through the Portico 5012 at line level, where do you set the input controls?

Where is the best place to set them? And at what point will you start to overload or distort the inputs?

I thought mic preamp levels were much lower than line level? Where do you set the mic input controls on the Portico 5012 so that they match regular line level?

Thanks

The Folcrom outputs mic level output. You're turning the output of the Folcrom into line level, by going into the 5012 (which outputs line level).

I'm not coming out of a Folcrom

I'm coming out of the master outputs of my mixing console

Can I run the master outputs of my mixing console to the inputs of the 5012 in silk mode for some Neve coloration on my mixes?

I've used the 5012 on the 2 mix a lot, it worked really well following a compressor
for a little make-up gain. You should be able to set the mic gain to 12 and use the trim to fine tune things. Silk sounds nice, too.

So is that a yes?

Can I come out of my mixing console's master outputs into the XLR inputs of the Portico 5012 without doing any damage?

Its all good.

If you prefer written confirmation from RND, I believe they address this
in the manual - they have it in PDF form on line if that is more convenient.
I think its covered fairly soon after the boilerplate warning page - its a tiny
manual, at any rate - shouldn't be hard to find.

Sorry been traveling, and just caught this thread.

Make sure phantom power is off, and you're good to go! I usually start setting the rotary switch at zero, and the trim in the center position. This will give you unity through.

Silk can add something for sure, and the high pass filter can be used to good effect on submixes.

Best,

Josh
