Box of Rock and Lead Tracks?!

I bought a ZVex Box of Rock pedal a while back for 100 bux of craigslist and while I liked it, I never really used it until a few weeks ago.

I was tracking guitars for a punk/rock/beach-boys kind of band and I couldn't quite get a sound I really liked. We had a good marshall amp and matching cab but it didn't quite have the guts I wanted and the more I messed with it the more fizz I kept falling into. So we ended up cleaning up the amp a little bit and using the boost section of the pedal and the sound really caught me by surprise.

I found a good mic placement and we were off. The guitar player had a nice G&L tele type and a PRS. With a little tweaking we had 2 complimenting rhythm tracks. And the fizz I was trying to not get stuck with ended up being really smooth.

Then it was lead guitar time. To be honest with you my only technique for getting a lead sound is to get a completely different sound to it cuts through a mix and turn down some lows on the amp(depending on the solo and song etc) But I used the actual overdrive chanel on the pedal and it really worked well with the rest of the tracks.

So I thought I would throw it a little praise and then ask the following question:

Lead guitar tracks, what are your tracking/mixing tricks? Especially in a really dense rock track (first example I can think of is the first velvet revolver album)

Thanks and happy 2009!

"Filtering" the sound with something like a Tube Screamer TS9 has been a long fav of many guitarist. Pedals like that push the mids forward a bit and cut a little of the lows.

The Box of Rock is nothing like the TS9. Thank god. The Box Of Rock was the 1st distortion pedal for me that made sense to record with. Less compressed and more reactionary than most pedals I've tried, and it seems to boost lows in the overdrive channel.

The Boost section is nice, it brings highs out, not mids. Though all the Box of Rock pedals I've tried sound different, as in I like some and not others.

Box of Rock works well on single-coil; Menatone King of Britains for humbuckers.

besides the obvious things like the right song, the right player, the right chops, the right guitar, the right pickups, the right amps, the right mic, the right preamp.......

The 'magic' is the room. dont ignore the room bro.
If you close mic it and choke it, it'll be a dead thing.
If you trust the room and give it some distance air and space....thats where its diggin.
