Hi Nathan,
I was just wondering if there was any info posted yet about the new comp anywhere?

We showed it at TapeOp Con. Should be 2-3 weeks before shipping, thanks for asking.

OSA (Old School Audio) is releasing the first compressor in their lineup. It's a VCA based design with very colored transformers on the input and output (there will be a slightly less expensive version also offered with transformer only on the output). It's linkable up to 8 units, so 7.1 is possible. The compressor is called the 'I.G.M'.

Hey Nathan,
I think these were originally touted as LA-4 style comps.....is that how they turned out?

OSA is still making the Opto compressor, it's just coming out second instead of first. There are also some other very interesting products coming out in the next few months from OSA that are unique.

Was gonna email sales for OSA but then I saw it was Nathan anyways so thought I'd post here.

Any more news on these opto versions? This one has me more excited than the VCA tranny thing...

The VCA compressor is a little delayed, probably 8 weeks realistically. We'll be showing/shipping by AES this year. The opto I'm not sure...there are about 5 products on the burner, and it's up to me which one comes out first. There are lots of Optos on the market (although not a 500 form factor one which is a huge bonus for pragmatic reasons), so I need to decide what fills a niche the best. Thanks for your interest! thumbsup

Thanks Nathan. I was posting a few weeks ago about if anybody makes a form 500 product over the next few years I'd like it to be inspired by something other than API.

Nice to see that's happening.

The IGM is in BETA right now. Excuse the flash, it's a quick mug shot of the comp that Dale took.

Nathan,

Are you basing this design on anything else currently on the market? If so what in particular, thanks.

Looks like it was modeled after the SSL?

I thought it would be best for Dale to go into a little detail here, which also address Tony's comment.

This is what Dale wrote:

"The IGM compressor (Intergalactic Gain Modulator) is based on a THAT VCA.
It's a low distortion, fast, and good sounding unit. The IGM is based on
their application notes and extensive conversations with the engineers at
THAT. The audio path is all OSA, with our high headroom op-amp and output
transformer.

The control choices do bear a resemblance to the SSL buss compressor -
simply because it is the best sounding VCA based compressor I know of. I have
used SSL compressors a great deal, and I do subscribe to the theory that an
SSL console is a half-million dollar lunchbox for a really great compressor.
That being said, I wanted to give it the same power, headroom, and color that
I have in the OSA mic pre-amps. Therefore, the similarities do not extend to
the audio path.

The Optical compressor is on the way - it is simply taking more time to
prototype and research the optical elements. I want to make it very special,
so I won't put it out until it is right.

The IGM is slated to go into production later this week, with the first
units shipping in 4-6 weeks. There will be some minor adjustments on the
faceplate, and a switch added for 'something a little bit special'. Stay Tuned.

Dale"

Hey, Nathan, or Dale...

I noticed in Pro Sound there's a mention of the IGM and that up to eight of 'em will be linkable for 7.1 operation; can you say if the link will be similar to the 525 link, or not, or how it would be implemented?

How about sidechaining? (I know, I know, it's a small unit)

Sounds cool!

It will be linkable to 8. There a couple ways to link them, BETA testing will determine which way to go. There is strong possibility for sidechain function as an option.

Hey ummmm...where's the I/O for the linking and sidechain functions? Since 500 series racks have one set of XLR's per channel is there a module to module link cable or ???

Talked to Dale about it yesterday, he said he's probably ready to order the PCB boards in about 10 days or so. From there I think it's about 2-3 for assembly and final testing and probably about a week of down time due to the holidays. Don't hold me to it exactly, but I know he's close...I've swamped them with orders so much I don't think he's had any time to look at it in the last few weeks (which is a good thing really, a big thanks to you Gearslutz for all the support!!!).

Yes, it's definitely in the plan. It's going to be some kind of cable, I believe on the front (again don't hold me to it), mostly because it's best to keep the rack electronically stock as is for 500 series compatibility.

Hey Nathan,

Is there a dartboard number for the price of the IGM on the board yet and when do you plan on starting to take pre-orders?
I know Dale has probably been pretty busy just keeping up with preamp building but I am pretty excited to hear the compressor in action??
