Thread Starter | Where do you use digital cables?
Okay I've heard that it's before and after a digital conversion? And I've heard it's inbetween digital devices I.E.: Mike pre out> (digital cable) >Apogee >(any old xlr to xlr)>AES/EBU input of masterlink>(digital cable)>console OR Mike pre out>(regular XLR cable)>Apogee>(digital cable)>AES/EBU input of masterlink>(regular XLR cable) >console ? Which one is it? Another question: If we're talking about spdif, what the hell is an spdif cable? Is it just a glorified RCA to RCA cable? Or is it two RCA connectors with digital cable inbetween? With Optical I have no idea what's going on there. Light comes out of those things. ? Whatever. I'm gonna order some bulk cable and solder me up a bunch of stuff and I figure I might as well make some digital cables, since I do have a masterlink and an apogee converter. But where is the cable going to go? Or am I just wasting my time because digital cable is a sham? |

Thanks rjx, That was very helpful. Still not sure where to use the digital cable though. |

You use it between the digital output of your A/D converter and the digital recorder (computer, HD recorder, Masterlink, etc), or from the digital playback source and your D/A. Digital cable sounds excellent in an analog application (I use Canare 110ohm in critical apps like overdubbs, and mastering) too though, but isn't necessary for it to function properly.

Thanks Nathan, That's what I initially thought, but I was mis-informed at some point so I had to go to gearslutz with it. Still feel like I'm fairly new to digital. |
