Congradulations to Taylor Swift, Jonas Bros. and Lionel Ritchie

Canned band tracks, but live vocals!
Maybe the vocals were a bit out front (YA' THINK?) but not terrible performances.

Considering how cold it was Taylor Swift was pretty decent.
Lionel Ritchie was good as you'd expect... he could phone it in if he wanted.
Even the Jonas Brothers weren't half bad.
The young kid is the real vocal talent.

That gig in that cold and that wind is a tough gig.
I was really surprised by Taylor Swift.
I thought that she was all fluff.
She's a quite decent, but not stunning singer.
Like I said, tough gig.
Go figure!

BTW... those mixes were gad-awful and the live feeds from the Dallas event spiraled into an almost psychadelic collage of canned songs, crowd, echo, feedback and thye fireworks.
It was so bad that my wife and daughter said "TURN THAT OFF!"
We went to the NBC offering and only saw the Ting Tings perform.
Wow... no hiding the fcat that the music was playback there!

I thought they all did great considering the blistering cold temps.

The Jonas Brothers rocked it, I must say.

Well, I am glad to hear Taylor Swift did decently.

I have had to turn the channel during 2 of her recent live performances. I am not trying to be a stick, but bad is bad. I did not hear the performance tonight, but am glad that she sounded decent (I hated having such low opinions of the one that country music is holding up as the "future")

The live performances I did hear, that I was impressed with, had to be David Cook and Natasha Bedinfield....

Taylor and the Bros were okay. Not my cup of tea musically

but, glad they at least sang live.

As not the case of the Pussy girls. Lip,sink, lip sink, lip sink...

I thought Lionel rushed his lyrics a bit.

But, I can imagine that to be the case

when your freezin' your ass off!

About 3 minutes into Taylors performance my wife looked at me and said "I understand why the music industry is in the state that it's in", then she said "can you turn the channel". The woman has incredible taste... that's why I married her!

I though most of the acts did okay but many of my clients are better musicians and performers... (some even play on these performers albums)... the cream does not rise to the top like it use to.

It's funny how folks get excited when people DON'T lip-sync these days...

IMHO:
Lionel Ritchie: money
Taylor Swift is more of a songwriter/storyteller than a singer(at this point) and at that, she is quite good at 19.
Jonas Bros: Don't get it,( ok, they're cute, young and bouncy), but singing, come on folks. Shut your eyes and just listen,(live). It's pretty terrible.

I was "excited" because they didn't lip sing and there was no auto-tune.

You know Larry, your wife might not have wanted to watch it Taylor Swift and wanted you to change the channel, but something interesting happened at my house.

Let me preface the story by saying that my wife is a holds music degree from The University of North Texas. Her instrument is voice.
It is VERY rare that she will watch anyone (much less a female) sing ANYWHERE unless they are decent.
If they have any deficiencies and don't make the grade (her standard) she'll tell you.
She probably still harbors a degree of jealousy when she see's people who are B.S.ing their way through a performance because she knows how good she is herself.
She knows that she could have been a contender, but life didn't take her there.
Still, she knows her craft VERY well.

So... she watched Taylor Swift's NYE performance and said, "Pretty good considering the circumstances."
I was floored!

The only person I have heard her give any credit to recently was Mary J. Blige and that was a few years ago.
She gives credit to people like Cyndi Lauper and acknowledges that Madonna eventually improved quite a bit over the years.
Obviously there are people she recognizes as talented, but she is quite the litmus test.
She DEFINITELY isn't judging them on how "cool" they are or what the look like.
With her it is: CAN YOU SING OR NOT?

If my wife actually watches a performance from beginning to end it is a HUGE compliment.

I only caught the Jonas Brothers. It was obvious they where playing with backing tracks. Must have been hard singing out there in the cold like that. Honestly it didn't sound good to me. Like I said though, singing in the cold like that would be rather difficult on the ole vocal chords. Plus that song had a lot of difficult falsetto notes. It sounded like the second song they did which I believe is their "hit" they switched on the ole autotune. I'm sure their teenage girl fans enjoyed the show.

I've seen Taylor Swift on TV twice, both times she was actually singing. This New Year's Eve show was the second.

I thought she was terrible both times. She can't hit the notes.

All looks and not much talent.

I didn't catch the performance but somehow I don't believe that is possible. It is amazing what passes for "rock" these days. No disrespect to John Fields whatsoever as he is a superb producer and great guy.
