I found it very difficult finding an appropriate reference for every band I worked with so I have started doing this too and it really helps. Not least just so you have an idea of what the client want without your own preconceptions of the genre. It doesn't help if the band bring in something imbalanced though.
Having said that, having a few tracks to hand that your know inside out can tell you so much about monitoring environments you're not used to.
