Thread Starter | Strange Rode NT1 mic problem
Hello all. I noticed today that my Rode mic didn't produce any sound at all. It has been on a mic stand for a couple of weeks at my home. I read that moisture can be one reason why the mic doesn't work. I haven't dropped it. Funny thing is that if i tap very genltly the mic it works fine for a while. After that wind like sound appears on the background. After that mic usually stops working after mic is tapped again. What could be the reason for this? I hope i haven't broken it. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Had the same thing happen a few years ago to a NT1 I owned for about 5 years (the one with the grey body). It was cheap and wasn't working anyhow so I took it appart and found moisture on the diapragm. Dried it off carefully with a cotton swab, has worked fine ever since. The weird thing was the moisture didn't look like water, was sort of oily. Never figured out what it was.

did you swap the cable or try a different pre. If the 48v isn't working proper or isn't getting to the mic, that could be the problem.

Thanks for the info. I'll try another pre amp and cable soon. I might do more damage to the diaphragm by cleaning it myself.

I have two NT1's that I purchased in the late 90's. About 6 yrs. ago both of them developed the same problem that you are experiencing. I called Rode and told a them the symptons and asked how to return them for repair. The told me they had a lifetime warranty. I shipped them back to Rode and they repaired them without a charge. I do not know their recent warranty policies or if you are the original owner, but it's worth a shot to call them and see what they say. MWP |

I bought a pair of mics during a tour and they told me I had to return them to the country where they were bought, in order to be serviced for free! Some worldwide post-sale service... | |

I'll share the end of the story. I contacted seller (Thomann) via email. They asked me to send faulty mic back to them. So I did and got working mic back without any additional costs in few weeks.

Old thread, but my Sterling ST55 just started doing this.... ughh.. I can sing into it at super low volume, but as soon as there's a spike in volume, it pops and shuts off. Give it 15 seconds and it fades back in.. It's the only mic I have, and well, its going in the junker now :( ~Rob.

so ive had an amazing experience with rode customer service this past week. i used their website to send a message to customer service stating the problem with my microphone. all i had was the serial number; i hadnt registered it for the extended warranty and when i went to the website to try to register it, i didnt have the "proof of purchase" that it asked for. within 24 hours, i received an email with an RMA number from their warranty department. i live in los angeles and i mailed it to their office in california the next day (i purchased tracking on the microphone). the day that USPS tracking said it was delivered was the day that I got an email from rode confirming that they had received it. the next day i get an email from rode saying that it probably needs to be replaced. 2 days later, i recieve a brand new microphone in the mail. so from the day that i contacted them to the day that i recieved my mic, it was like 10 days. not the mention that I DID NOT HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY OR PROOF OF PURCHASE. thats just how great rode customer service is!!
