I've been listening to Laurie Andersons 'Big Science' a lot lately and holy moly Steve Albini is like the male version of her! Listening to Sweaters is like listening to a Shellac song from another world.

To often though they consider themselves the only/final authority which is why Albini appeals to people. Producers should help the band find their vision, not impose their vision on the band. There is a market for that as Albini has demonstrated with great success

I must say that while i really don't like many of the bands that Steve Albini has worked with, Steve has been and still is a major influence on my production. I think Steve Albini and Jack Endino have kept things in perspective for me and prevented me from thinking that I have to get that "604 Records" sound (I hope that reference wasn't a little too west-coast canada for you all, but if it is, just think of Nickleback).

While I definitely use more toys than Steve, and meddle in the band's songs and with their gear more than Steve, his overall approach has stuck with me. My goal is to help represent the bands performance, and while steve might disagree, I don't hesitate to jump in and meddle a little if needed. I have tuned many drum kits for bands I've worked with.

I suppose, Steve has helped me realize is that production techniques lie on a continuum rather than simply "bare bones" or "Over produced" binary. I don't have to be a hardliner like Steve, but I also don't have to be a CLA. There exists a middle ground. (I like music that both producers have put out...)

Steve is steve, and that is fine. He is great, I think his snare sound is often genius (some of his kick sounds are something to be desired).

Wow that is such a stretch I'm gonna have to listen to it again and see if I can connect those dots.
