Davy Graham RIP

I just found out that the great English acoustic guitar player Davy Graham has passed away yesterday. A true pioneer of jazz-folk-world music, he is credited for practically inventing the DADGAD tuning that became the standard tuning for Irish guitar playing in particular.

Davy Graham's early 60ies albums were tremendousy influental and he was a hero to players like Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Paul Simon and maybe most importantly Bert Jansch who went on to become a major acoustic guitar force himself.

Just a few days ago, I finished reading the great book 'Guitar Man' by Will Hodkinson, a very entertaining and funny account of the author's quest to learn guitar in 6 months and perform Davy Graham's 'Anji'. A highly recommended and truly inspiring read.

Davy Graham was a true free-spirit. An unbelievably creative and innovative artists that was uninterested in commercial success but sadly also side-lined by substance abuse and alcohol problems for much of his life.

Listen to the sound clip on his website, this says more than any words could: Davy Graham, Official Site

RIP

Davy Graham should have gotten royalties from Jimmy Page.

Not really, but Burt Jansch should have, and eventually did. Page completely stole his work and retitled it 'Blackmountain Side'. It's pretty much note for note throughout.
