hey folks i'm about to buy two Onyx 800 8Ch. Pre's which would cost me ~1900 bucks..then i saw the Onyx 16Ch. mixer for 1400.. are the Onyx 800 pre's really that much better then the regular onyx series?? and even if it was so i mean come on 16 channels on two 19" units for 1900 and then the 16 channel complete mixer for 500 bucks cheaper... anyone know what the deal is??? once we talk about the onyx pre's.. anyone any experience?

hello, I don't know anything about onyx mixers but I would really doubt that the pre is any different. the 800r has 8 channels of AD conversion onboard. maybe the mixer does not and the converters are outboard in that firewire box which would make the total price more like what you would expect. the conversion in the 800r is supposed to be decent. don't really know as mine just arrived last night and I have not unboxed it yet.

I don't think they're any different. However, keep in mind that the 800r has 8 channels of 192khz/24bit converters, impedance matching and a few other 'extras'. I think this is the reason for the price difference. But if in doubt, why don't you email mackie?

However, if you could use the extras of a mixer, go with it! Some shops also offer a modification for the Onyx mixers, making the direct-outs post-EQ which makes them available when recording.
Front End Audio does this, I'm not sure if there are more, you should look around for that. It's also possible to do this yourself, but this will void the warranty.

$1900 for 2 would be the most expensive I've seen in a long time.

They are great though.

Amongst the features already mentioned, the other reason for the diff is really the size...16 channels for 2U of space.

Targeted more for the live market, where space is at an even higher premium than the studio, this is worth the additional cost.

But if you want to break it down ~$100US per channel is cheap.

Cheers,
David
