little help assembling a songwriting setup?

I originally expected to have about 30k to put a rig together. I got hosed, so my budget is only 1/3 that...10k :(. I know I can still do a lot with 10k if I am smart, but I'm a proper slut, and realize that 10k is a pittance when it comes to doing it up right.

I will use a Mac G5 running Nuendo and Live 4. The rest is wide open, though I am very interested in the forthcoming Wunder 4-channel pre unit.

I want to be able to lay tracks that I could keep in order to save time in a bigger room. I initially wanted enough pre's to track drums, but I am not even sure that that is critical at this point (as I will be tracking any live drums in a bigger room anyhow). I am primarilly a singer. I write with guitar and keys...will use soft synths/Scarbee stuff to handle keys. Have a sick guitar rig. Need pre's, conversion, monitors, and possibly outboard eq/compression if there's any $$ left.

Thanks in advance.

How many tracks at a time?
Is the idea to get "keepers" and continue tracking at the big studio or just rough demos?

Great question. A bit of both actually. I'd like to be in a position where if I nail a vocal or a guitar part, I'd be done with it. I hate playing "chase the demo", and have done way too much of that in the past. So lets say "gearslut demo's". I want the limiting factor to be my performance, not the gear...if that's even possible at 10k.

What I need for "me" would probably fall somewhere between 2-4 channels of pre's. Husky rock vocal (warren haynes-ish...chris-cornell-ish), Acoustic and electric guitar...soft synth stuff will stay ITB. Eventually I'd like to be able to handle a drum kit (8 channels max), but only when I want a dry, dead kit...my room is one step above anechoic...lol (not really, but to give ou an idea that the room is quite dead).

Likely no more than 3 tracks at a time (when I am recording acoustic guitar and vocal)

I guess 1 pre, 1 comp, 1 mic, and nice A/D chain for 10k. I think 10k should be enough for that. Going for nice 8 channels I think would be over the top for your bugdet and your room.

If I had 10k right now and reading GS for some time. I would get.....

the portico pre. Because I'm to curious to hear the thing.

I have no clue as to what mic to get.

but I would blindly get those 3 things. I have no way of hearing before buying in bolivia.
